I usually have about 3-5 buses that I run.

One for Bass/Kick/Subs, One for perc, often another one for percs that don't run every bar, one for synths, and one for vocals.

I often have a compressor on each bus, although I have kinda fallen in love with Camel Audio Phat (love the dist unit+compressor) so lately I've just thrown one on each bus, just to glue the different channels together.

I also often route for instance the synth and the vox into a new bus, before letting it go to the master channel.
