From what I read, Tomtom sold the data to help better plan city traffic routes. The police turned around and started using the data for speed traps, and that is why they have stopped the practice.
You could cry 'yeah right'. But I feel like it was genuine. I am all for traffic data to be used for better planning.

I have a problem with this. Unless those with this GPS system have explicitly stated that they want their GPS data recorded, and have released that data for someone else's commercial gain, I don't see why this should be allowed.
What I do in the generation of that data is mine, not for someone else to package off and sell for purposes unknown.
