you can upgrade the battery so it will last longer. If you have a 4 cell battery now it probably lasts about 2 hours give or take. If you upgrade to an 8 cell it will double the battery life, but it won't fit flush with the bottom of your computer. I kind of like this though, because it gets the bottom off the desk and lets air flow around easier. (The biggest battery I have seen for a dell was 12 cell and it lasted 5 hours.)

Sorry, I might not have been clear....I was talking about how long batteries last in terms of life-span...like how many months/years, etc...good info though, thanks.

It depends. If you leave your laptop plugged in all the time the battery dies out a lot faster. I used to rarely unplug my 6 year old Powerbook G4, and the battery will only hold a full charge for about 20 minutes now. You need to completely drain the battery somewhat regularly to get the longest life out of it.
