I'd probably do a bit of both. Playing what will make the crowd dance and get pumped up but at the same time making the set exciting. Meaning big buildups and stuff like that. That always seems to get the crowd going.

its to do with errors and error correction. the faster you burn the more errors you introduce into the data you put on the CD.

when the d/a converter in the CD player turns the bitstream from the CD back into audio it can correct some errors but if there's too many the audio will skip and drop out.

most modern CD players can happily cope with quite alot of error so its not so much of a problem but if you want to avoid the possibility of a skipping CD you are best off burning slower.

the speed you burn has NO IMPACT WHATSOEVER on the quality of the audio. none at all.

Thinking about getting this set up. Seen some pretty good deals on ebay. Anything better than this setup that's in the same price range?

That's more than good enough to get the basics down so I'd say just go with that.
Plus you'll be seeing those in clubs everywhere so might as well get use to them from the beginning.

If your actually serious... and your a newb. Get virtual DJ, and if you MUST invest money out of impulsiveness get a big ass subwoofer and 2 15 inchers. Preferably 2 big ass woofers and 2 speakers + VDJ(free program). Instead of getting a shitty mixer because your on a budget, vdj is a good basic mixer and it's FREE. You'll go ALOT further as a noob with the speaks, no one will give a shit your using a comp when the bass is like WUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMPHH.and they are dancing their asses off .. As far as mixers go, Just wait till you develop your skill with VDJ, i don't reccomend buying some piece of shit compact rig because it's a waste if you decide to buy good gear in the future. Get the right thing the first time around. Don't hmmm and hahhhhhhh because if you can be good on VDJ, when you get real equip than u will pwn. If you get cdj's yur fuked because you can;t afford good sound. So start with the speaks. Thats what everyone wants.

Or do you wanna be stuck playing what everyone else wants to hear ...because thats where the fun stops, and theres no $ in it to be honest. Everyone is a dj now, and... you might not suck. But if any half decent dj comes first than your left out. so don't bother with the club scene. You may get 100$ a night, while it took you 20 hours to come up with an epic playlist, so really. Researching top 40 and blending that hilarious jive together, while wasting your time with that just so a bunch of chatty cathy's can pay you nothing and pretend they are having fun is a no go. If you wanna make cash, play for free @ parties and no one will forget you if you played an epic set, and they will def chip in 5$ a piece to have you back. If they don't its because you suck and you wouldn't make it as a club dj either. Maybe you can get the equipment to pay for itself over time. OVER A LONG TIME.

Ppl like being invited to parties where it's more about the music than the crowd. If you play top shit, and your cool enough that people will like you, than they will want you to be @ their parties, because without you , the music sucks balls, and if no one has a good time, they wont go to the next parties...they may also promote the shit out of your presence wherever they are, so that when they have a party blah u will be able to play good shit and attract some ppl so hopefully in their minds they can get status .

A good dj will turn a bunch of ppl who came for their friends and did not plan on dancing or getting too drunk because of the next days consequences, into a bunch of fiends....the music just creates a vortex where you dont want to be the same boring douche it connects you to your higher self in that special moment where you realize nothing matters, so u dance. When you realize that music is more powerful than your ego ever could be, than you are somewhat enlightened. Ppl travel to see artists they never had a conversation with. You wanna be the source of that epicness and get paid for it. Well , Good luck. Takes more than skill. Gotta be an oppurtunist social butterfly and ppl gotta like you. Only ass kissers can climb the ladder. DJ's are politicians. So pucker up your lips and start kissing ass. In the end, if you can't get the important people to like you, you'll always be the 2nd banana. Regardless of how much talent you have.

Thanks for the great advice! Yeah I'm looking to do a bit of both. Play the popular stuff (commercial house/techno) etc. while still being able to mix. I like how Tiesto goes about DJing. I saw him live and he plays what everyone wants to hear but he's also a decent mixer. I like his style, producer, worldwide DJ, and also his own "club life" DJ show.

I obviously cannot start out at this level but he's a good role model. I have the unfortunate situation of being based in the United States in the South where quality dance music is pretty much dead. All there is here is rap, pop, shit that I can't stand. But there are a couple exceptions obviously.

So you think VDJ is the way to go eh? I will not need a mixer when playing live, just VDJ and the subs? How about an external sound device, because my laptop soundcard is pretty shitty. This sounds the easiest route in my opinion as well. Burning out CD's seems like a pain in the assssss.

I think its also a lot about what you need to become what you’re looking for. If you start with vdj you will not learn to beatmatch in any way for example. Its just synchronize and mix in, that’s it! That’s actually cool if you don’t want to take any risk, give the crowd what they want, some hip hop, some rnb, a bit of guetta n electro house is cool for that. But in my opinion, if you really want to learn to dj (yes, including beatmatching), I suggest cdjs (I saw the suggestion of buying 2 cdj 400s enables you to play via usb instead of cds) or vynils (which is pretty much dead though).
The 2nd choice is more the “professional” of learning how to dj since there are just a very few who play with vdj in a club.. its either cdjs with cds, an usb stick or a laptop with serato or traktor.. but be it Richard durand with cds, markus schulz with usb, carl cox with traktor or benny benassi with serato.. they are all djs and do a good job!

Working with the tracks is what defines a dj, in my opinion.

Speedy J uses Traktor for his sets. He doesn't beatmatch. Instead he uses the auto-sync feature with four decks to create live mash-ups. Does that make him anything less a dj? I don't think so.

Beatmatching is the most overrated part in dj-ing, if you ask me. It's combining the right tracks at the right time, to create a a certain 'energy' or 'flow'. How you do it, is completely up to you.
