Is there a free resource thread around here? We should start one if there isn't and sticky it.

What scares me the most is the proliferation of opinions that not only support piracy, but actively argue that because it's readily available it somehow makes it perfectly justifiable to STEAL it & that it would be silly to pay for it, in fact almost idiotic!

What's also apparent is the unfortunate complete mismanagement by the record companies, movie studios etc. Instead of capitalising on the huge potential of the internet, they did the polar opposite...they dug in their heels, they wanted it on their own terms, they stalled & stalled going after anyone who threatened their pathetically slow rate of progress until finally people developed the whole system themselves & we wont even get started on the pricing structures of CD's, DVD's etc. All in all they created a legion of disaffected consumers who viewed the enemy as the majors. Fast forward another generation & you have teenagers growing up with arguably an even bigger hatred for them & an inherited attitude of piracy not being remotely shameful.

The answer to all this? i wish i knew i personally don't like the "free" model, i believe good products should be paid for just like any other purchase like a car or a house or a haircut. There can be no excuse to pirate music software, as pointed out there are incredible freeware DAW's, instruments, plugins etc not to mention software packages like logic which offer everything you could ever need to write a track from start to finish for as little as a weeks wages.

Hopefully the more of these discussions there are, the closer we might come to a solution that's fair on both the consumer & the manufacturer...got my fingers firmly crossed

I dont think the industry would be obliterated, you can't pirate guitars lol.

But it does have a big impact. People are used to getting stuff free, its considered culturally normal to illegally download, it wont stop.

I grew up in that mess, and before I started making music I had no clue how much it affected the industry. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

But anyways, the problem with cracked software is not that people are stealing it to be cool or whatever lol.

What happens is: Some new software pops up, you get curious about it, you cant afford it but you can download it, you try it , it becomes part of your workflow, it becomes your go-to instrument. But, you still can't afford it but you dont want to stop using it because it would set you back tremendously. Atleast that's my case (yes I admit it lol). Tho I keep it to a strict minimum, 2 synths 1 compressor 1 eq (wich I all plan on buying once I get a job) All my samples are from free packs.

Little bit of insight from a kiddie using cracked software.

I dont encourage it btw.

I always liked the idea of karma. Too bad it doesn't always apply in today's world. I fully agree with what Raphie said, except that it isn't always as easy as that. I use, then buy, and that may take some time, and I believe most people would do that too (those who don't will inevitably fall behind).

That said, I don't find any use in exploiting the people who can't.

I would just like to make a point regarding ME SOUNDMAGUS (not Magnus as Magnus noted - That must annoy you mate, i know it annoys me) using pirated software to make video tutorials.

I made the mistake of using a pirated version of a piece of software WHICH I OWNED.

I had mistakenly opened up the pirated version instead of the version i owned (the creater/owner of the software donated ALL of his software to me for doing the video courses). I had downloaded the pirated version to try the software out but was then fortunate enough to make a deal with the software owner to get all his tools for free.

The person that noticed the cracked version in the video openly stated this in an open forum, which in turn made me realise what i had done (he noticed before i did) and moved me to show proof that i actually owned the software to anyone who wanted to see it.

I believe pretty much EVERYONE who produces music on PC/MAC are/have used warez at some point, hell i know producers who are at the top of their game and making a LIVING from music produciton and are using MAINLY cracked software.

I dont endorse or encourage the use if Warez but its an age old battle that will rage on, too expensive so i use warez, its expensive because it takes xx amount of work/time etc a battle that will never be won i fear.

I am luckier than most as i very seldom have to pay for my software now (apart from the biggies like NI and Cubase) BUT i believe as stated you can do very well without spending a penny or using Ware now-a-days but people always want the biggest and the best.

So its a self moral question i believe, do you or dont you steal? after all thats what it is no matter hw you look at it and yes, i am willing and unembarrased to admit that at one point i was prolific in using Warez, but i reached a point where i no longer had to use Warez - SO I DONT!

The OP point is valid, it was a tad "retarded" to use a WArez app on a paid for video tutorial, it made me look like a fool and a rip off merchant, but due to the fact i proved that i owned the software showed that i wasnt a retard, just perhaps a bit forgetful and air headed :P

Mark

I made the mistake of pronouncing it with a french tongue at first. He told me that wasn't necessary and preferred to hear it in plain Dutch.

if you look at all the Leon Bolier videos you'll see that he has a collection of legit cds of synths drum packs and so on, maybe like 90% of the people he started with a cracked version but when he earned money with music he bought all the stuff, something that still many people don't.
