Many people aren't bored of Beethoven's fifth yet, even though it's memorable.

Even though you are "over" Stairway to Heaven, doesn't mean that many people aren't yet "over" it, and still prefer to listen to that song rather than some filler song.

As I said, I totally get that you're bored with a few memorable songs. It happens to all of us now and then. But to say that filler songs will "endure" for longer than classic memorable songs is a little bizarre.

If people create a memorable song, it may be played by the world's top DJs for a month, appear on a number of compilation CDs, then perhaps reappear every few years on a classic compilation.

If people create a filler song, it may be played by one or two top DJs (who knows), but it could also be played by only a handful of relatively unknown DJs around the world, who have "discovered" its merits and want to share it with their audiences. And these DJs will find that they can play the song over a longer period of time since their audience isn't also hearing the song in a number of other situations.

I guess I'm taking exception to the word "endure". They may "endure", in a very small and limited way, for a particular DJ/ club, for a while longer than some overplayed classic. But come next year, the classic song will still be heard here and there, while the filler will be relegated to a fond memory for a handful of people (though the memory will be hazy, since the filler song didn't really have anything memorable to it).

I with meriter, on this. Just some things that come to mind are that my fondest memories aren't associated with specific songs but the totality of the evening. In that consideration, a song's place in the evening is transcendent as it's less a singular piece of work and more of a tool that a good DJ makes use of to convey his work. I don't think producers should relegate themselves to making utilitarian loops but I also think that they should be focused on contextualizing their work.

Okay, so what's the overall message here?

We should make non-memorable songs because...?

Almost the right question, except it's "filler" not "unmemorable". But yea I agree.

This thread isn't relevant to you so just stay out of it. It's really just a simple thing to think about and doesn't require this kind of rigid analyzation. No one is telling you to make non-memorable music. Make whatever the fuck you want. Simply saying the subtlety and background music has it's place. It's just something that I noticed happening in this real world situation that might apply to some of the producers here. Like maybe next time you have a track with a strong hook and distinct melody, make a remix that settles more into the background. It helps fill the space instead of making tracks that are all "hey look at me" and tiring out your audience with it. There's nothing particularly hard to understand about that. Quit arguing for the sake of arguing.

If you've ever heard Girl Talk before, it's all "hey look at me" kind of pop music. There's no subtlety, not like the kind you are talking about.

If people want a break, they can go get a drink...

Sure, if they paid to see Girl Talk, they can go outside, smoke a cigarette, and chill out for a bit.

I don't know why you guys insist on calling any track that's minimal or lacking a catchy hook "filler", as if the night's focus is all about "memorable" tracks that a lot of people might recognize.

DJs play popular songs because it gets an immediate response out of the people in the audience that know it. That's all there is to it.. the rest of the songs still get played, and the crowd still enjoys them, so what exactly is the harm done here? That those tracks are getting more attention than the minimal/not-so-catchy tracks? That's kind of how music works.

Well I think it's more opinion then anything. Like "Cafe Del Mar", if someone called it a filler track off of Tranceport, and another song, say, "Words", on that album was the focus. Then years later, not too many people care about "Words", but "Cafe Del Mar" becomes a classic.

Just en example, none of what I said about either of those tracks is true, just context.
