No, you're only talking about the style. You would never call one of those 18 minute Villalobos remixes "progressive", even though they develop extremely slowly over long periods.

I've heard all kinds of free-wheeling bullshit about what "progressive" means with regards to structure. I've heard that it refers to the use of breakdowns. I've heard that it means more "song-like" structures than techno records. I've heard this incremental build nonsense from former trance fans. And, as someone has just pointed out, to a lot of people today, "progressive" is nothing more than side-chained 128bpm house music labelled as such on Beatport. If there were any kind of common consensus about what the word means, I'd concede that this is just a term evolving. But it isn't. It's just wide-spread ignorance and guesswork. And it's all bloody annoying, which is why I tell people they're wrong.

Simple fact is progressive means nothing as a descriptive term, and it hasn't since about 1995. Once upon a time it had a meaning, now it is purely a tag attached to a certain scene and sound.

Is that because the various interpretations of the word 'progressive' are gradually building up layer by layer as the thread goes on, or because it is going off in a new direction which this style of thread has not seen before?

You and your mates sound like ignoramuses when you use the word progressive like that. Deal with it.

It's a marketing label and nothing else.

I'm not gonna bother getting into a debate with you or System J about it. I've read enough threads where one or both of you jump on people for using certain tags or genre descriptions in a so-called incorrect manner, enlightening us on the original meaning and use of the word, refusing to accept that for many people, that meaning has changed to something else.

But that's the point. To make your reply more thorough, they're both maintaining that the word, progressive, hasn't just taken on a new singular meaning. It's taken on so many "meanings" that at its newly distilled essence, it is practically meaningless.

They didn't seem to be saying that in some earlier posts in this thread. Instead, they informed what the original meaning of the word was and how people are wrong to use it for its newer meanings.

Right. The issue surrounding the conflict then seems to be, not the facts pertaining to the original, genre-pertinent meaning, but whether or not using the word (other than when, and perhaps even if, referring to its genre-related etymological origins) has any value beyond that of creating further confusion.

We're not debating that the word refers to the music you're describing, just that the word did not arise from the structure of the music, but rather the marketing and music journalism world.

Progressive has meant the slow buildup and builddown of track structure to me and also most long out drawn house/trance tracks with slower BPM.
Thing is when other people i know irl refer to progressive EDM, most of the times, if not all, they refer to the same definition i hold.

Let's see if the progressive retards fall over my post as well...
