And most of the anime TV shows I've seen look downright retarded to me.

They are, especially if they are fantasy... I find most fantasy stuff stupid though, no matter the medium.

I tend to watch stuff from the 1980s and early 90s because back then they did everything by hand and the over all quality tended to be a lot nicer. Also I watch series that just as well could have been done as live action but were done as anime for whatever reason (mainly because they are derived from manga). Oddly a lot of those anime have been redone as live action serials or movies now. Things like Touch (high school sports/baseball), Hana Yori Dango (school romance), or Maison Ikkoku (romance/comedy) all could (and for HYD and Maison Ikkoku have been) done as live action tv shows or movies.

If you ditch the medium because of the medium and not for the content though then that seems a little silly. That is like saying I don't like paintings because they are drawn, I prefer photos... It just seems slightly stupid.

Ive never been able to get into Gundam... None of the series could hold my interest for long.

For mid-size/large-size mecha I prefer Patlabor.

I've watched (in order):

Death Note
Ghost In The Shell (Both seasons, the two movies and the OVA)
Ergo Proxy
Code Geass
Hunter x Hunter
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

I enjoy some films as well, Studio Ghibli and Makoto Shinkai being favourites. Really eager to get my hands on 星を追う子ども (Nov 25th)

Ive watched Gundam SEED but even though people keep saying to me that it was very good i found it a bit too whiny.

My goto for mecha is Full Metal Panic. Sagara Souske is a lot of things, but he is not whiny. Also worth it for Chodiri, Tessa and Mao.

A point about anime being redone as live action, two more that i have watched: Gokusen (prefer the manga) and Nodame Cantabile (prefer the anime but the live action is very good as well)

EDIT: Oh damn how could i forget about this when discussing awesome live action remakes of awesome anime...this was gold!

I've watched way too many anime series to remember them all, but here are some of my favorites that I do:

Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X
Initial D
Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO)
Cowboy Bebop
Full Metal Alchemist
Berserk
Mushishi
Hikaru No Go
One Piece
Samurai Deeper Kyo
Full Metal Panic
Gungrave
Hellsing
Trigun
GITS Standalone Complex
Fist of the North Star

Honestly there are so many others. Can't remember them all. One Piece is the only one I still watch/read on a continuous basis.

And my favorite Ghibli film is Laputa followed by Porco Rosso
