It tends to be just a really well-engineered bassline (you know, that bassline) and a pounding beat... forever. Fun for about an hour or so, but unless you're on drugs it just gets really tiresome really fast. That's how it is round here anyway.

Yeah, that's long sort of been psy trance's pro and con. It really hasn't changed much in over 15 years, which is good if you don't mind dipping your toes into the scene every once in a while. You know what you're going to get when you want your fill, and can ignore it for months or years after, secure in the knowledge you probably won't be missing much in the interim.

I just don't think psytrance has any real connection to "pure trance" anymore. It's much more like a techno or hard dance kind of party, druggy by necessity, relentless and unwavering.

That's what I was getting at in the first place. It's not so much that psy is "pure trance", but that the environment it gets played out in tends to be parties where folks are more zoned out than in a concert setting.

Of course, that can be said of any genre of music. Psy is no more trance-inducing than jungle in this regard.

Just another view. To me trance started in 1986 with this, although it didn't really exist then:

That's why to me trance is still synthesizer music with a disco beat.

Proper trance to me also are the early 90s tracks like:

Jones & Stephenson - The First Rebirth

Jam & Spoon - Follow Me

Quench - Dreams

Yeah, the parties definitely have the original spirit. They always just disappoint me musically.

Because a lot of psy trance producers and DJs are amateurs and will always be so. I don't know why, but that genre has never been able to have the kind of legitimacy as trance, house and techno. There is just not the kind of professionalism and musical sensibility that you'll find with house and techno and trance. It's like in a way, it's stuck in the 90's, but hasn't gotten any better really.

psy trance is a travesty to electronic music. the fact that the adjective refers to illegal drug users shows that straight edge people like myself are in a class above psy trance fanatics.

same reason happy hardcore is never going to have cred - it all sounds the same and isn't very good
