It's at least 6 months away yet (need to find/build the dedi studio first).

But I do like the idea of of a docking MBP or two. In fact I don't see any reason not to grab a couple of the big screens and a couple of MBP's sharing a big Pegasus drive, that's still only about £5k.

Ivy Bridge is just a die shrink. There isn't going to be a major upgrade in performance. The next big upgrade is Haswell which will be released in 2013.

And this "first gen" Thunderbolt will be here for a very long time. The "2nd gen" Thunderbolt is coming around 2015.

I disagree. Look at the benchmarks and performance of the Air refresh: The entry level air is now on a par with the current mid/top spec macbook pro. I expect the performance increases in other models with only a slightly different processor.

It's not just about processor speed itself, but what they get out of it and what they're doing the with the busses and rest of the component choices.

Oh and I didn't mean wait for the next gen of thunderbolt - it's not going optical for a good while - I meant I personally will never buy a first gen of anything from apple. This is the first product that they incorporated thunderbolt in, so I'll personally wait until they iron out the creases with this model and put it in others.

@meriter - just buy G-raid or LaCie. Problem solved. I just got a G-drive mini 500gb and the thing is amazing.

I bought a bunch of those 3 TB G drive things. I ended up consolidating them into a mega raid storage unit.

The good news is that even tho it says don't remove sticker or your warranty is void, when you do a warranty claim, you just send the hard-rive.

I had 1 drive with some bad sectors. No issues. Fill out a ticket, send the drive. Got a new one 1 week later. Those cases are sweet. I like the heat sink. In fact i was looking for a way to add something similar to the drives in a Mac Pro.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I have one of those LaCie 1tb with usb, eSata, and IEEE and I'm super happy with it. I'd like to get another but I guess they're out of production. Great product even came with all the necessary cables including a fw800 -> fw400 cable.

The new Macbook Air can come close to the last gen of the 2010 MBP due to switching to Sandy Bridge. It was a change in architect and not a die shrink like Ivy Bridge is. You're not going to see a similar bump in CPU power with the 2012 upgrade. You'll have to wait till 2013.

Those drives are amazing. The g is also tiny and damn robust. Only problem I've ever had is that very occasionally (I mean once a month maybe) it isn't mounted when I boot up so i just flick the power switch off/on and it's back.

Also has way faster file transfer that my western digital or seagate external drives.

@timothy - I reckon the mac pros will see a bump though - It's been a long time since a revision and even though CPU's have not had leaps and bounds in that time, the thunderbolt & new mobo developments will squeeze a lot more out of a slightly faster CPU, not to mention the new mac pros are going to have a faster buss speed all round.
