Got to Avalon around 10:15, checked my coat and headed immediately to the main dance floor, which thankfully was still open (I've been shut out before by coming too late, and what a bitch and total buzz kill it can be to get in!) Headed to the area right side of stage that everyone thinks is VIP (shhh!) where there was no line at all for the restroom. The bartender down the stairs there was the best, no line there either, she was very welcoming and friendly, and made a strong drink with cranberry juice from the bottle (not the cough syrup concoction that the other bars spray from the spigots).
Over to the main dance floor and I started running into friends left and right, was a great way to start the evening! Before I knew it, I heard "Seven, Six, Five..." and realized the countdown was already starting and saw Digweed up on stage. The visual was a picture of a baby with "Happy New Year 2012" written on it. John's birthday is also Jan 1st, wonder if maybe it was his baby picture?
To me, the first half of Digweed's set was a warm up, and I agree that the visuals were rather creepy. A few washers bumped into me and I thought there was a weird vibe on the floor, maybe just too many "Come to the party and by the way, who is the DJ" crowd? What's really odd is that I forgot to take any pictures, except for a few of the stage, so can't even prove that I was there!
The music was good, but really didn't have me captured until a little after half way through when it took this twisted, warped tech turn. After that, the rhythm and energy really picked up and I thought it was one completely amazing mind f*ck, wound up staying until 7 when Kazell came back on. The floor was maybe 1/3 full at that point, but the crowd left knew who Digweed was and exactly why they were there! So much energy in the room, and the New Year began for me...
