Well, that's partly true. Hard quantize is only applied when you're punching notes into its sequencer (I don't think that can be disabled), but you can easily offset, nudge, create and apply groove templates, etc. after the fact. Having the ability to drag/drop MIDI would be cool, but not necessary - you can still use it in that capacity by just triggering Nerve directly from your DAW (i.e., just like Kontakt). Nerve's best feature in this regard, though, is its ability to extract the groove from any REX or RX2 file and apply it to any pattern. For example, if you have a percussion loop, you can drop that into Nerve (you'd have to convert it if it's not already a REX/RX2 file, though) and it will analyze the groove, including all of the offsets and accents, and you can save the groove and apply it to any other pattern - it's great for lining up e.g. congas from one loop to hihats within Nerve. I've been using Kontakt for years, but I prefer having the dedicated sample editing features in Nerve for drums. YMMV, of course.

don't you find the sampling features kinda limited ? Kontakt is just way more powerful. ANd if you are looking for something like a groove box, reaktor also has sample editing features that are better. I thought the demo wasp pointless. WHy add another layer of abstraction. I never really got the point of a sequencer inside a sequencer triggering different instruments. I mean it makes sense for synths, but it just seems redundant.

I would say that they're more focused, rather than limited. Yeah, you can definitely get more power out of Kontakt, but Nerve simplifies things and saves a lot of time.

No disagreement here, but I do tend to use both the onboard sequencer and my DAW (same goes for Maschine). I usually start with the drum idea in the drum software, then drag the MIDI out to my DAW to arrange the song. But, Nerve has some really nice features for creating variations and fills. I typically don't like trying to arrange the drums for the song in one environment (i.e., the plugin's sequencer) and the rest of the song in another (i.e., my DAW), so I ultimately end up dragging all the drum patterns into my DAW and disengaging the plugin's sequencer anyway.

This put me off too, I cannot stand complexity for the sake of it. I already have a DAW, why would I want the clutter and learning curve of a mini DAW, this is the reason I didn't buy Giest either. I know Cubase so well, the way the quantise feels, so I don't want anything putting me through another learning process, life is really too bloody short if you have so many competing time vampires sucking your neck as I have.

I know others perhaps more teccie than I would have no issue with this sort of doubling up, but it just bugs me that developers over complicate things.

Just to be clear - you guys are asking questions and I'm just answering them as best I can from my "I just got a cool new toy" perspective. I'm not suggesting that Nerve is better or worse than your preferred approach.

As for Geist, I bought it, tried to like it, and sold it shortly thereafter. Same thing happened to me with Guru years ago. But Nerve just clicked with me right off the bat, as did Maschine. Actually, BFD2 (another FXpansion product) clicked with me as well and I use it for all my "real" drum parts, but I just don't like the Geist/Guru approach at all.

Okay, so what I'm really liking about this right now is just how simply it integrates with the padKontrol and how within seconds I'm coming up with neat ideas.

I use Ableton, and this absolutely does not replace the drumracks or manually programming in some of your own beats. What I find this does is get me a wealth of ideas in a very short period of time.

It's also really fun. For those of us that are hobbyists and aren't aspiring professionals, that's probably the most important things.

Definitely agreed.

Coincidentally, someone asked about un-quantized MIDI input on the Xfer forums earlier today and Steve's response was that it will be a feature in a future update, along with MIDI import.

I've spent some more time diving into the UI and you can really mangle things. This is a really cool toy.

Don't worry I was clear all along that you are just airing a preference / some general observations as we all do and as ever we all have different likes and dislikes.

I'm one of those thikos that would never even wire 2 different DAWS together. My core nature is very clutter free - my nwork desk is legendary for being totaly clear of anything other than the single piece of paper I'm working on. Everything in my home is either filed or binned, there's no in between, no clutter, no hoarding 'just in case I need that lump of polystyrene one day'. I always throw away boxes that kids toys come in along with all instructions unless they are critically important as this would be a clutter distraction lurking away somewhere.

In production I like things as simple and stripped back as poss - it's just my personality. I can be incredibly an@l, for example when I clean a room it takes me hours as everything is cleaned, I mean even down to plant leaves and the bottom panel of a couch, inside draws, lighbulbs, cielings, cables, plugs the lot. Because I'm obsessive in this way, having too many complex music toys makes me feel down as I want to know every part of it inside out, so I get distracted and waste time.

What a knob.
