Actualy I personaly love harware v software debates and don't mind a bit if they get heated, afterall it's passion that got Mankind out of the stone age, not a quiet retiscence. Personally I enjoy conflict as the passions are laid bare and it hurts no one.

So I've lately been realising hardware sounds much more rounded and full of character compared with ITB. I say this as someone primarily ITB.

Those old Queen records such as 'Another One Bites The Dust' and several of thier big anthemic numbers have a life, depth, character and colour that no ITB production could hope to approach. The over riding character I hear from ITB productions is like a brittle cluttered sharpness.

I think having a budget set up does not necessarily imply you are short of wonga.

Wtf kind of comparison is that? There is no "in the box" version of the guitar, drums, and vocals that make up the vast majority of that track.

Again, this isn't about ITB/OTB or SW/HW - it's about buying decisions, how much, using the bare minimum versus buying something nice, etc. Despite all the excellent points raised here, I think the biggest difference is this (speaking in generalities based on my years of active participation in both forums):

TAs see music production as a means to an end. Get there as fast, cheap, and effectively as you can. Get songs done and get them signed so that you can be considered a "pro".

Gearslutz see music production as enjoying the ride. Get the cool gear that you've always wanted and have fun with it. Buy what you want if it will make the experience more enjoyable. Finishing songs comes second (if at all).

Personally, I think I fall more in the GS camp in that regard. I guess that's why, when someone asks me what my hobbies are, I reply with "making music", rather than "finishing songs."

There's no right or wrong approach here and I'm obviously speaking in broad generalities (and, yes, I do finish songs). But, I do have to mention that I find it surprising that so many young producers can sit at a computer and click away at a mouse for hours on end and not get bored out of their freaking skulls. Maybe it's a generation thing, but I get tunnel vision when I'm doing that for too long and I need to get away from the computer and get my hands on a real instrument to keep my creativity alive.

Well, as someone who has hardware and software I would say that they both have perks. I'm probably leaning a little bit more towards software though, purely on ease of use, and tbh the difference in sound is negligble.
I think the main perk of HW is the hands on tactile feel, I mean sure, a midi controller and a soft synth is good, but a proper hardware synth, with dedicated controls is always ready to go. Also, it's nice not to have to worry about CPU load.
However software has that convenience of saving patches inside your projects, and being able to load up multiple instances.. and the sound is more than good enough to make professional tracks.

So yeah, it doesn't really matter, end result is key hey?

Clicking at a computer is what they have already been doing anyway for half their lifetime (browsing TA or Facebook, searching for music online, checking e-mail, also often using a computer at a day job or for school). Some of those many hours can easily be replaced by music-clicky time. For at least some of us, the computer is our main interface for life. Which may sound really demented and sad and nerdy to old folks like you.

I guess that's part of my point - I spend 7-9 hours/day sitting in front of computer for work (and, of course, that's when I do my TA/FB browsing ). So when it comes time to make music, staring at a computer even longer does not appeal to me.

You're only as old as your medications make you feel.

for me , it is all about information display. Much easier with software. hardware sounds better but it all ends up in the same place. I don't know. Does fresh brocoli make your stool a perfect bristol chart specimen when it is frozen or natural ? And by bristol chart, i mean the traditional one, not the new one used to rate dubstep.
