Do we mean impact by getting it started or blowing it up to break out of the rave scene and an essential part of music around the world?

The early rave days in the US and UK obviously had the biggest impact. From there the big festivals everywhere else had a bigger impact in reaching the masses.

It was never a competition though.

I guess you never heard of yellow magic orchestra or kraftwerk.

But let's give all the majority of the credit to arthur baker, juan atkins and the gang.

Clearly because when it's underground, you don't need to clear samples.

I guess you've never heard any Detroit techno apart from Cybertron - Clear.

It's just that it's enough saying USA brought it first which Germany then UK took after. Holland made it's share but not as much as the last two.

And you must be dutch or something.

No, I'm not, and no need for such base assumptions.

Silly, blunt answers beget silly, blunt replies. Your second explanation carries considerably more merit than "you gotta be kidding me", which implies that you simply don't care about the subject matter. If that's the case, then don't post.

Trying to discern which single country had the biggest influence on EDM depends on whether you're talking about origin (U.S., Germany), culture (U.K., by a longshot, which was in turn influenced by Spain, India and as System-J mentioned, Jamaica), early output (U.S., U.K., Belgium, Holland and Germany) as well as the kind of electronic music to which you're referring. Gotta remember (and whether you like Gabber or not), the Dutch invented an entire, distinct genre that during its heyday, was absolutely massive and sold a shitload of records. They were also of huge influence in the early Techno scene.

i honestly think people give detroit/chicago way to much credit. I mean, all those guys did was sample pre-existing stuff and loop it together. But i guess that's essentially what house music is.

Welcome to the wonderful world of armand van helden and ejay.

I don't think anyone can do what Todd Terry or Todd Edwards can do. Sampling isn't as easy as it looks.

Defiantly USA, The United Kingdom or....

What about Japan? I'm surprised nobody mention her

Yellow Magic Orchestra? Roland?

Other honorable mentions: Italy, Germany & Jamaica

And actually after thinking little bit further I could also add UK in my first post.

+1

The answer is obviously Germany, the US and the UK. I would also give a worthy shout out to Jamaica, not only for inventing dub and an entire studio culture in the 1970s, but for the huge impact the Jamaican musical diaspora has had on everything from hip-hop to jungle to dubstep to progressive house.

...and Netherlands as stated. The thread topic has the word 'important' in it which is getting people riled up but it all depends on the time period. France for JMJ but I don't know much about France EDM outside of him (so I can't comment further).

I'm not sure where EDM will go in 2012 but we are definitely at a crossroads

I always find it funny that everyone always says detroit or Chicago...but always leave out new York.
