Eh, I'm fine with 320 MP3s, but I have a DAC and headphone Amp geared up to my computer for my 580 Senns. Them shits can make even the crummiest digital file sound full!

That's why I never bought an iPod. Fuck supporting a business that would ram those kind of limitations down your throat. Have no idea why the general populace would even subject themselves to that, but I'm glad I didn't.

I have a few FLAC files of tracks that I absolutely adore, but mainly I just go with the 320 digital route. Really can't hear a difference between 320 digital and FLAC. Now 320 vinyl rips, that's another story.

A sane person would never go the mp3 route at all. When i buy tracks i want them to be the same quality as my vinyls.

I've also seen other studies where people could not tell the difference between WAV and mp3 in a blindtest but said they can hear when it was not blind.

This all comes down to the fact that sound quality is our own brain/imagination for the most part when the differences are really small. For example there was a study with 20 experienced professional musicians who did a blind test between real Stradivari and new models and they could not tell the difference.

First off, it depends on the sound system. There's a difference between listening on a pair of headphones bought at Aldi on a 20$ soundcard and a pair of Sennheiser HD 650/800 with a half decent DAC + headphone amplifier, not to mention high-end systems for tens of thousands of euros.

Second of all, it's not about the obvious difference. It's about how the different elements of the track flow together and the overall ambiance that comes with better quality. I probably got more FLACs than anyone on this forum and although I can't always spot the exact difference on all of them, there are clearly difference in the way things work together in a FLAC file and an mp3 file.

On what type of music? There are major differences between how a trance track sounds in flac/mp3 and how a classical track sounds in mp3/flac.

Yes, I've done some back in the days. Managed to spot the difference with a pair of Pioneer HDJ-1000. Wasn't able to hear the difference between 192/320 though.

With the amount of memory available these days on computers/ipods etc I really don't see why there isn't a phase out of lower quality sound files.

I'll also add (can't remember if I already wrote this) I see FLAC as an investment for future audio-equipment. If I ever get the finances to buy high-end Stax SR headphones for 5000€ and DACs in the same price-range, I wouldn't want to be limited to 192 mp3s.
