Which is proof that sometimes you need to hear tracks in a set to appreciate them properly. It's not that I don't like them but a 2-3 years ago, I'd listen to a track singularly and love it and then look at putting it into a set. Now it's hearing things in a set sometimes at different tempos or whatever that can draw me in.

There is some really incredible music on J00F's Nine Lives Album. To me, he seems to have been christened some time during the early 90's and it seems that the goa/psy scene was a big influence on him that carries through his sound today.
I say this without reading the interview. I'm just basing my statements on what I've heard from him in his sets and productions. He's the Danny Howells of trance and progressive. He cares much about his sound, he cares about the party. I get the sense from listening to him that he wants everyone listening to have the best possible night while he's behind the decks.
Long story short, I think he's 100% in it for the music.
I hope one of his friends finds this thread and sends it to him. John deserves the props.

The problem nobody seems to be adressing for this initiative is exactly how this resurgence will SOUND. One of the biggest issues with trance is that both the big players and the crowd are relentlessly blinkered towards other kinds of music. It will not be supplied with the needed outside perspective, ideas and inspiration to reinvent itself if none of the trendsetting players have the balls to put aside the "trance" label for their DJ sets or productions, and set the precedence that a "pure trance" night doesn't automatically mean five to six hours in the grey area between progressive house and psy trance.
These things carry a significant financial risk, and will require drastic changes in the way the big players market themselves. Will J00f and others in a similar position within the scene tackle this kind of challenge?

I've addressed the issue of his/their musical focus before, but have been proven mightily wrong with the success of their club nights. Maybe i underestimated the gullibility of the clubbing audience, but there's probably more to it.
Even though i'm not a big fan of it anymore. Genre mixing is still the norm, with decades of fine-tuning mixing and set-flow ideas and most traditional electronic music with the exception of hiphop and breaks related genres mostly being purposefully produced to fit in such sets it really isn't a strange thing either. And set quality for a clubbing night is in many ways much more important then the actual music itself.

Sorry, but going by the kind of bills I see for clubnights around here and the music I've heard at these nights, I don't buy that genre mixing is "the norm" for bigger events where bigger DJs like J00f are involved. There is too much promotion that needs to be carried out and too insular expectations from the crowds for that to happen. Hell, you only need to look at previous J00f-related threads on TA to see what the reaction is once genres like house or disco are brought into the equation.

I'm not sure if we're clear on this, because i picked a rather unfortunate term for what i meant. With genre mix i meant a mix within one particular genre, not a mix of genres.
The thing is that J00F does actually mix up the genres in his sets, albeit fairly closely-related areas. You might be surprised how much techno he plays in some club sets, but it's also standard for him to go from progressive house and tribally tunes at the start, through prog-psy and into all out psy trance and splashes of goa. Granted, that's not a radical musical progression, but in any of his longer sets you're still guaranteeed to hear a lot of stuff that is in no way "pure trance", whatever that means.
Al of which is again why I think it's misguided of him to talk in these purist terms, because it's not what he's about as a DJ and it's not even what his nights are about. He's booked Dave Seaman as support for his next night at Passion, and Seaman doesn't play anything like trance these days.
J00F is not the only one, I've seen Christopher Lawrence speak out in interviews about how the trance scene has gone downhill and the pr thing they did for his label Pharmacy is priceless when it says “You’ll never be embarrassed to admit that you like our trance”.

Seriously though, it's starting to get more and more tiring with every rant and i'm still confused as hell about these following standpoints:
- What makes his sound 'true trance'. On what grounds are you even supposed to claim something like that?
- How is his position any different from all the others thousands of good producers who are unable to attract attention because their music doesn't follow certain trends?
From what i can see they were just in a luxury position back in the nineties and now their music's abstract and druggy nature is starting
to catch up with them. They're already doing far better then anything i would have expected from listening to their music.
I'm still sympathetic to his cause, but this is just getting stupid now.
