I'm a firm believer that if you blame your local scene for not liking "your music", you're a crappy DJ to begin with.

You know, to me, a lot of trance is crap. Meaning if I was there when you played YOUR set, I would probably be rolling my eyes. I play progressive and breakbeats, so YOUR scene is not MY scene.

All I can say is, play better sets with tunes that no one will recognize at all. The whole "I played a new remix" thing doesn't fly with me - its still the same song, regardless of who remixed it. The only exceptions are songs like Sylver - Turn the Tide, where every remix sounds different.. compare the original to the Rui Da Silva mix - its a true RE-mix.

Play more interesting sets, that's all I can say.

Hmm, but thats exactly what I did.
You will rarely hear a set with the tunes I played in that club, being played in the same club by another DJ.
And believe me that if I would play Sasha's style with tracks that are due to be released in 10 years from now, it wouldnt have changed things, becuase you can stand up there and play your finest tracks and then some wanker comes up and playes Dee Dee - Forever and everyone are going mad.

Hmmm. Well I HAVE seen Digweed and Sasha several times in London. I look up to Digweed with much respect. I've been playing college parties where the majority of the people don't know their tunes, so at times I attempt to play a little (very, very little) cheese, perhaps to give them something they know, to relate to. But even then, it's not the most well known of it. I also do not limit myself to what's current; if an older tune should/could thrown in, why not?
I do play Prog in the deeper vein- digweed, sasha, humate, kleinenberg, tomeii, porter, junkie XL, on+on+on.... It's what I love and am serious about.

Almost everywhere you go in the USA, all you hear is rap and pop music and if its anything resembling techno, its prolly cheeze. Being a true trance amateur DJ is very dismal, even if you have a good ability to pick the right tracks and even have good mixing skills. Ive yet to see a trance DJ bang any college house party using strictly trance SUCCESSFULLY.

If youre a big name with mad skillz like PVD, Johan, etc. . . . you can spin whatever the fuck you want because ppl are coming to SEE YOU.
Otherwise, ppl are coming to the party or for the beer, chicks, etc. . . .and if youre not playing the right music, youre gonna offend a lot of ppl and youll get the boot.

the other guy deserved to win
granted its not based on dj skill (although we don't exactly know how well you mixed yourself...)...but on crowd and judge reaction

the other dj catered to the judges and crowds taste...and got rewarded for it
i hate to say it but not everyone has the same taste in music as you and because they don't like your taste in music...doesn't mean they don't have any taste in music either...

a dj'ing competition is not based solely on skill
its an overall atmosphere...revolving essentially on crowd reaction and how the crowd responds to you (and the judges)

regardless of how shitty the mixing was, if another dj gets the crowd moving more than you and plays what they want to hear...then they deserve to win because they're doing their job better...
you're there to entertain the crowd...and if that means playing stuff that isn't your style then maybe you should try and play for a different crowd?

I agree with that.. If your goal is to win the crowd and the crowd expects something SPECIFIC (like at a DJ competition), play songs to please the crowd [like the other guy in your case]. If your goal is to become famous for being original, play something NO ONE has ever heard of.

I have to say that this is an interesting thread so far.. Pretty big clash of opinions.

It all depends on the crowd. Some will only want to hear the same old songs they've heard a million times already, but others are more open to new songs. There's not really anything you can do if the crowd wants cheese.

You know what you are saying is true, the goal is to get the crowd moving,
but when I played, everyone were jumping up and down, everyone were making huge noises and the floor was packed.
I certanly did my job as good as I could.
But since the judges thereselves are shitty DJs that keeps hammering Lasgo and Dee Dee every week in that same club, the moment he played those tunes, he won, no question about it.
I Think what he did was low, because its no problem to come with a shit load of commercial tracks and just fade them in and out and to win, I could have easily done that.
But I chose to give them stuff they have never heard before, I dont know how many of you know the Israel scene, but the tracks I played, are rarely played at parties for the crowd I was playing, unless there is a serious DJ involved who knows the stuff.
Otherwise its just Lasgo - Dee Dee - Ian Van Dahl.
