Even though PvD has a large fan base that will nod to anything he plays and makes, he still somehow fear they will leave him if he doesn't submit to mass appeal. He's not greedy, he's paranoid.

Yeah, because your shit amateur psycho-analysis of a man you've never met is extremely scientific.

I'm beginning to think Paul Van Dyk was always a bit of a cheesy bastard, and it was only the nurturing A&R of Mark Reeder that kept him on the deep and trancey for so long. Ever since he left MFS the quality of his output has plummeted.

He left MFS before OTAB and Reflections and both albums, while no way close to the quality of the MFS stuff, still have great quality tunes. Also, he always had the cheese in him, both for an angel and even his epic remix of love stimulation could easily have turned into pure unadulterated cheese and probably would be if he tried to make those songs today. No one champions Mark Reeder's deserved place in the history of trance and EDM more than me, the guy is probably as important as any producer or dj in trance history, but i think too much is being made of a producer past his glory days putting out an average to below average album. You see this happen all the time in other genres of music , and we are seeing it with PVD today. Still a great live DJ but either needs a new partner to work with or just stick with DJing like Sven Vath has.

Dae Yor is probably the only track that is close to the classic PvD style. His reworks and sets will always be in my memory, he was a sick dj.

I might be talking complete horseshit here, but I seem to remember that OTAB was actually delayed for a long time because of the issues with PVD leaving MFS. Sasha was playing Avenue on acetate years before it was properly released. PVD left MFS in 1998, and I suspect a lot of that album was finished by then. It's a decent album, but I honestly haven't listened to it for years, it's really not that special. Reflections is just crap, in my opinion. Without meaning to get personal, I've got the impression from reading some of your posts you're a bit soft on PVD.

Very soft on PVD, same with Sasha and Digweed. Grew up going to those guys shows and buying their songs, albums, etc. Still see either of the three just about anytime they roll into socal. Neither of the three is anywhere near their peak in 90s but I still enjoy their mixing live. Most of their new songs leave more than a little to be desired. I still think OTAB is really good and I do like some of the songs on Reflections. Especially the title track and nothing but you, though thats just an arctic remix really. There was a lawsuit between Paul and MFS over the album but if memory serves well its because Reeder charged that the album should be under MFS but lost the case. That might be utter shit as I dont really remember. And avenue was released as a single in 99 a year before OTAB came out and why Sasha was playing it live around late 98 as a white label most likely.
