I'm assuming you are just working with poor samples. However, does the frequency change as you play different pitches?
I usually add a touch of reverb to orchestral samples, because dry samples tend to have overtones that can mess around with the mixes. Reverb smears it a bit so it's less likely to have those problems.
It's kinda like having a poorly aliased image versus a properly anti-aliased image on the computer. |

He probably is the most well versed on this forum on orch samples, and of all the composers I know (I'm a score mix engineer) he knows more about reverb and engineering than he should.
