I've played with most synths, my best mate had a massive collection but the one that stands out for me personally was the an1x. It takes time but it really for me was incredibly musical and just took you off into all sorts of sonic wierdness, but a total bytch to edit in terms of the way my brain works.
I'm quite into dusty analogue again lately. Somehow I get this feeling of love from thier dusty old quirky circuits. I think I'd like a DSI Prophet even though I guess it's not 'dusty'. I've never actually seen / used one in the flesh.
L4C - interesting to hear you didn't think the cs6x was up to much - i heard its nice for strings but maybe ill give it a miss
Tehlord - DX7s are well cheap! i heard there v difficult to program with that little screen but i love fm8 so want to try a hardware fm synth at some point - maybe the fs1r as Dave pointed out
Richard - Yeah ive heard loads of good things about the an1x on the web, and there really cheap! Apparently it does good (but simple) FM too as it only has 2 oscillators (or operators)

The FS1R is actually MUCH more difficult to program than the DX7 is. Far more parameters, countless menus/pages, but only 4 knobs and a pretty small, and very cluttered, screen to work with. That is the number one complaint about the FS1R, and it routinely gets honorable mention in every discussion of synths that are notoriously difficult to program. But, people will put up with it for its sounds and capabilities. That said, there are a couple of free software editors available for it.
The DX7 is a total pain to program, but I guess if they're cheap enough then why not. I had one in about 1989 and it got smashed to bits when it was run over by a lorry on the way back from a gig.
I just don't see the need for hardware FM in a world where FM8/Rhino exists.

To the point I may break in to his house leave everything absolutely untouched and just swap the mics out, putting Sm57's in the boxes (unless that box happen to be the original Neuman wooden case with original clips and velvet lining). CS6X is a peice of shit. I sold about 200 of them and saw at least 25% of them come back. The Triton was way better but it didn't age well.
One of my faves was always the Ms2000b - you can still get some fucking great sounds out of that puppy.
