The like counter on my site displays the number of people who endorse the campaign, and could be reasonably taken as a number of votes, from that source only. I believe they do show data re number of votes. The need to differentiate isn't paramount. DJ Mag will be discredited when she charts, with or without this campaign. The question is whether they introduce changes to stop them losing more credit next year, and I believe that if this spreads into the millions then there will be evidence of support for the proposed changes.

The poll is just a popularity contest. So if Paris Hilton wins, it shows that she is popular, and the poll has served its purpose.

If you wanted it to be something other than a popularity contest, then you would need quality control as to who can "judge" the DJs, and not just let any old Joe Clubgoer throw in his vote. But that's not going to happen, so it will remain what it is.

So the way to stop the scene being ruined by a commercialised poll is to make some sort of magical new poll?

How about questioning the fact that trying to quantify anything art-related as 'best' is absurd in the first place?

I think the DJs' DJ element address that. Additionally it will become a more level playing field if voting is open for only 2 weeks. And expanding it to a top 500 would enable the poll to be sorted into a top 100 - or there a bouts - by genre.

Really, the only reason everyone else is complaining about this poll now is because their favorites aren't winning anymore. Better get used to that - you're now officially a part of the 'older generation' (ie: the haters!).

I disagree. I'm looking forward, not back. This is starting to spread on twitter quite rapidly, and has been shared by a few DJs you'll all have heard of. This is about harnessing the resentment in the hope we don't have as much to bitch about in future. Failing once doesn't mean you don't try a different tact and give it another go.

But why vote for Paris, who is actually trying to be the top? Why not someone who isn't even a DJ, to truly show the absurdity?

Why not unite all the resentment against her, Guetta, and the poll to bring about the changes that have been proposed? Sure some people will think it's because she's the best DJ, but they're dumber than she is. The internet would be awash with articles and individuals comments stating that it is a travesty. Makes no sense to divide the votes between two candidates to achieve the same thing.

Plus this has already been supported by a few big names in DJing; there's really no way that the average person wouldn't know that she was voted in due to a mix of this campaign and the fan base she has from being a celebratory, who on the most part won't know the first thing about DJing.
