The truth is that unless you are lucky enough to play in a afterhours type setting, people are most likely going to chop your head off if you play too far outside of the microgenre they came for.

That's very true, and it shows. I live in a place where I'm lucky enough to see guys like Markus Schulz and Ferry Corsten play 6+ hour sets from time to time, and once things move beyond peak-time anthem stuff, their musical taste really starts to show and those are by far my favorite parts of the night.

Unfortunately most gigs in most cities are 2 hours or less, so a lot of people don't get to see that.

edit: This is a great interview, by the way.

meh any tom, dick and harry who's been in the scene for a while can tell you that. He thinks the crowd thinks stuff from Airwave is flat he hasn't even road tested it what an idiot.

haha, what a dumbass!!!!

his brain is flat for sure!

how could you even compare stuff from Airwave to his annoying "In & Out of love" mashups full of random sirens and farts?

At least he gave an (honest) answer... Didn't make up some silly excuse to justify himself.

He's probably right. The kind of crowds he plays to just don't want to hear that kind of trance, and if he played it he would lose their attention. This basically illustrates how he has boxed himself into a corner with his fans - he can't play good music he enjoys anymore, because he has steadily moved away from the kind of crowds who would appreciate it.

If i'm not wrong, Armin has a radioshow called A State Of Sundays were he plays a lot of stuff he actually like, including Ambient music. Still, it's not a side project but can be a start for something else, i suppose.

I just looked up the latest tracklisting for that, and it's just more uplifting trance.

Hey Jack, sorry. It's called ARMIN VAN BUUREN PRESENTS – DOWNTEMPO SESSIONS:

http://www.astateofsundays.net/armi...6-may-2012.html

I think it's part of A State Of Sundays.

Yeah, i checked the tracklists and perhaps there's one or another ambient music in there, but most, it's just chillout and downtempo mixes of cheese trance

Here's an interview from last year for who's interested, it's in Dutch but has English subs. It was for Yolanthe's tv show.
I don't know if it has been posted before, but I think it's a nice one too.

When I listened to the interview at the OP and he was talking about the way of mixing, using all possible sounds and visuals I had to think of Ben Liebrand who inspired him. He also made some visuals for Armin. At the first video above there is an old picture of the both at 7:12. Armin probably learned a lot from him, especially paying attention to the crowd and dance floor. That was something Ben sometimes forgot he once told in an interview.
