This film is an unashamedly adolescent science fiction action romp, but in recent years we've grown accustomed to that meaning dumbed-down, contrived Michael Bay shit. Dredd is a throwback to the '80s - it is pure pulp material, but executed with a level of uncompromising artistic intensity. Combine the wanton carnage of Robocop with the stunning production design of Bladerunner and you have an idea of what this film feels like. You might not enjoy the subject matter, but it would be extremely ignorant to deny that this is a superbly well made film on just about every level.

When they first started playing ads on TV, I wrote it off as just another 3D cash-in on a familiar franchise (though one might argue just how popular the Judge Dredd property really is). The movie didn't seem to stand out.

Then the reviews starting pouring in, and I was completely surprised. Critics are calling this one of the best action romps to hit theaters in what seems like forever. And Karl Urban, who never stuck out in my head as anyone who is anybody in Hollywood, dominates the role.

So after this huge turn-around of opinion in my book, I'll catch it.

Well, we have the director from Endgame and Vantage Point, coupled with the writer from 28 Days Later, so I'm guessing it'll be a bit deeper than the Battleship movie. But you have 2 female and 1 male starring roles=eye candy to make up for lack of ??, mayhaps? It IS an action flick after all. And Karl Urban usually goes for the action filled, not so much of the emotions and character development-roles, so who the fuck knows.. In British English, a motion picture is normally referred to as a "film". "Movie" is American English, you won't hear many Brits use it too often.

While I do agree on the origins of the words, the term movie is used for your purely entertaining motion pictures, whereas a film will, or at least should, make you think.

And no, Inception does not count as a film just because you've spent the last two years contemplating if the miniature dreidl stopped spinning after the picture faded to black.
