If you really think about it, nobody took advantage of you. You used each other. You needed food, shelter, and money. You used the military to give you that, until you turned your back on them.

Whining?

I'm happy with the decisions I've made lol

I made this thread to see whether people thought soldiers were heroes or not and got a bit sidetracked with a rant. There's mixed feelings about the whole "hero" thing, so I feel it's a valid topic to discuss.

Oh yea, because that's real help and appreciation

VA hospitals? Countless employers with policies that give preference to veterans? How much fucking help do you want? If you can't adjust to civilian life that's your issue, not the military's.

I know they didn't take advantage of me, because I didn't let them.

I earned my food, shelter and money with the backbreaking work I did.

Then my unit got order to deploy to Iraq and I had a reality check. I was a bit older and wiser about what exactly it would mean to go over there and what it was exactly for.

No regrets here.

I was able to adjust...

So no, it's not my issue. But it's definitely an issue for countless veterans out there coming home without a pot to piss in.

So how exactly did you avoid a DD? From what you've described it sounds like you deserted.

Definitely didn't desert. That would've been the stupidest thing I could have done.

A guy in my unit tried that without us even having orders for Iraq and he ended up having to go with the unit after he was released from the brig.

So what was the loophole that let you escape from going to war and abandon your unit?

Lol @ your use of language.

"Abandon my unit"

I'm not at liberty of discussing the events that lead me to "escaping," on a public forum, but if you want to Skype over a beer and let me tell you the tale I'd be willing

Really though, it's quite a story. And who knows where I'd be if it wasn't for my balls-to-the-wall courage. I don't think I would have gone to school and graduated, though.

I'd probably be fucked up in the head and drinking my life away, somewhere.

Someday I'll write a book and this story will be written within it in a chapter. And maybe someday the stigma of what happened and how I handled my military career won't seem as unpatriotic to some as it does now. I'm proud of what I did, though, and those who have seen me progress since "escaping" the military have changed their minds about what I did because now they see what it was all for.
