My goodness, this thing is a MONSTER!! Not too happy with the looks and the fact that I'll now have an octopus on my desk but I'll be getting this bad boy asap!

am i the only one that laments expandability/flexibility offered by the old MP? As a showpiece, sure - it looks very Apple-ish. But for someone who may not be content with graphics, HD, etc... this is more like:

Nah, you're missing the point.

The concept is about making the thing modular by using external devices as expansions. With that amount of TB2 ports just about anything can be connected to it, and the "fixed" aspect of the base unit itself will hopefully mean reliability, which is a prime requisite in a pro environment (which this is obviously aimed at).

The old mac pros weren't flawless - I used to do 3rd party tech support the Mac Pros and they were solid but still had weird problems, just ask L4C about his random logic board issues. A lot of these random problems were caused by incredibly difficult to pinpoint combinations of certain HDD's and certain videocards, with particular revisions of logic boards.

TBH, the more I think about it, the more this concept makes sense; in the studios I worked in we were all using 4+ year old Mac Pros and the only things that got changed were hard drives and PTHD cards. This allows a studio better accessibility and easier function.

The trash bin thing is funny but you have to realize the size of the new mac pro; it's 10 inches tall and 6" wide. In fact, if I wasn't white, it would closely resemble my penile appendage.

Lol, true that.

But really, a mini? By the time you add a nice screen and all the other bits you're at a imac which is cheaper and faster?

I have the old MacPro and honestly, I never used any sort of expansion card on it except for HD's and memory. All my gear is either USB or Firewire so to me, I don't see a need for an expansion slot. Back in the days, definitely, but today, nah. I do kinda like the idea of daisy chaining HD's better, but I don't like the idea of having an octopus on my desk.

I bought my imac in 2008 for $1200 new. Apart from putting new RAM ($50) and an SSD in it $180 it has served me flawlessly for over 5 years now.

So $1430 divided by 5 = $286 per year. I spend more on meals out in two weeks than that, and the trusty imac has a good couple more years left in it.

The Mac will be a secondary machine, mainly for screenflow. I've got a 40" Bravia I can plug it into and all my samples etc are already on the external I already own. I can get an as new i5/500GB/8GB for less than £400 and the equivalent iMac is more than twice that second hand.

If it was going to be a main computer then I'd probably get a 2009-2010 Mac Pro for a grand or so.

Good choice ! great bang for buck which is hard to get with apple!

I got mine a few months ago for around €850, 2.6ghz quadcore mini, works like a dream

yeah that's a great point. That's completely reasonable.
