I think what Palm (yes, it's Palm) is trying to relate is that propping up people with charity rather than actually investing in them is not helpful when done en masse.

I think he also has some personal acidity towards what has happened back in Viking Norse Land, which has seen a big erosion of the middle class somewhat caused by heavy handed social financial policies.

I actually believe it's good, but only to an extent. I grew up quite poor but I was lucky to be educated in a decent state school (although you only got out, what you put in) and I grew up mainly on welfare with hand me downs etc. Without it we would have starved and frankly I would not be where I am today; own a house, a business and all those material things we seem to crave.

What doesn't help is when you just teach people to rely on free food, shelter and care, you're not empowering anyone to better their lives. Some can't due to health or mental issues and they need to be looked after, but just creating a massive soup line is not the answer for people who could have a better life given the tools.

I remember being so broke while a Student that I literally didn't know how I was going to survive and then by chance a charity grant for a new computer I had applied for 6 months prior magically came through. I spent half on a new computer and the rest kept me fed for the next two months until I finished school.

And there is no logic to it. Being nice is not logical. It is an adaptive behaviour that allowed humans to flourish. I think it makes the place you are living better for everyone and perhaps selfish, it makes things better for you , for society and everyone has a higher standard of living than without it. That is the outcome, the motivation doesn't really matter.

True, but how did you know about my uncle? Nevermind, back on topic. I personally feel that paying towards others who have been dealt a bad hand or don't have the skills to thrive is a certain kind of tax for those more fortunate or lucky to have more.

I earn decently. The fact I can, is in part, because others don't or have to work for a pittance to make an economic advantage for us.

I know wealthy businessman who always jokes that in the morning, he works for the government, and in the afternoon, he works for himself; that the 50% income tax he pays allows him a quality of life in his country that is one of the highest in the world and that by every wealthy person paying this, he and other less fortunate people are collectively better off for it.

Yeah, but what is wealthy? I know money is KEY, but what about 'free time' or 'independence' ? Are we better off just automating our lives with daily response algorithms that focus on 'execution' and 'accumulation'? is the modest handyman with a regular job and little stress wealthier than an entry level programmer at Google and/or an ANalyst at Goldman Sachs?
