It is the DJS job to get the crowd into it, yes, correct, but the music is what does it. I know this is going to become another opinionated, heated thread b/c we all take comments to heart. I don't agree with a DJ jumping around like a fool. Lighting a lighter is classy. PVD is not the most annimated behind the decks, but who wrote the rule that physical activity by a DJ is standard. People liek Carl Cox and Danny Tenaglia know how to get a crowd involved...the fact of the matter is that when I saw Oakenfold doing laps around the decks and pointing to the crowd, his mixing was awful and his track selections were not of a world class DJ. Entertainers they are, but they are not rock stars that jump around stage...It is an art, and it is all about perfection. The only word that comes to mind is Stoic! PVD is stoic behind the decks, he is working and creating. He always interacts with the crowd in his own unique way...and his fans respeond to his subtle actions (i.e. winking at the crowd, claping his hands). Their Disc Jockey's not Lawn Jockey's

I just do it exactly the way I enjoy listening to it. This is most of the time it is with banging beats. It is even with a soft thing, a soft melodic idea, or whatever. I still like to have it rocking. Keep in mind what this music is made for, first of all. Its not made to be easy listening on the radio. Its not made to be easy listening in television. Its actually kick ass in the club. This is what music is. This is the purpose of this art form...to listen to it and let the frequencies actually blow you away. --Paul Van Dyk

Actually, from what I know, Paul van Dyk pays absolutely no attention to the crowd, which is why his mixing is flawless. But I've never seen him or heard of him clapping his hands or anything of that nature.
If Oakenfold was doing a shit job of mixing and selecting songs, then he shouldn't be away from the decks. But if they can pull it off, I say let em'. Tiesto has done that sort of stuff with flawless mixing, so I say if you can get the crowd more involved without affecting the quality of the music or making the experience cheap, then go for it.

No offense bro, but that is a stupid ass comment. Seen the Dutch Dimension video with Tiesto? He walks around well and jumps up and down well his tunes are playing. It's a DJ's job not to just play great music, but to get the crowd involved. And usually when the crowd sees that the DJ is having a great time, they respond well. Think Johan Gielen @ Trance Energy 2002 earlier this year. When he raised up a lighter during Lexicon 4 - Reach Me (Svenson & Gielen Remix), and 10,000 people raised their's too, it was magical. That's how trance should be. Just my opinion though of course. |
yeah i agree with you. i love tiesto and that dutch dimension vid.

Yeah, that's right, a fence *DICK* I have no problem with any DJ making a spectical of him/her self for the crowd, but jesus, get the mix right if you are gonna do it!

Dude, your taking things way too seriously. Unfortunately, the internet makes humor perceptive and context based. It's not a big deal at all. It's not a situation at all. I was just trying to give you a helpful hint. For all I care you could have said "Fuck you shit-eater, I'll say what I want, bitch!" and I could have cared less. So just take some maalox or xanex and relax.
