I'd say that it depends. Grabbing a fader and recording automation in real-time is usually quicker than clicking with a mouse, especially if you're using a multi-touch control surface and automating multiple tracks or parameters simultaneously. But, using a mouse is usually better when you need precision.

Depends how you like it and what you need to do... I had to try the midi controllers for automation to see for myself it wasnt for me, I dont need to do it live because I can just keep playing the same part over if I need to. For me its just a time saver because I need perfect precision at the end of the day(somewhat), people spend so much time on production as it is.

The only way I would consider them for synths personally is if I could get perfect shells made from the soft synth company, with LCD's but that would cost a bunch, might as well GAS to infinity by then.
