I think using the argument of the major labels artists stuff not being "music" is the poorest excuse possible. Especially since the big labels own many of the small labels with good artists on them.
Secondly people need to stop saying its just the big pop labels who are complaining. Because it's not just them.
The situation is relativly easy to fix, stop fixing your prices of your cd's, as you admit to doing, and more people will buy more of them.
To an extent I agree with the riaa, and all the artists who support them. From a purely analitical standpoint downloading there albums or singles is stealing, no if's ands or buts.
However the thing not taken into account is that for alot of people if they had never downloaded all the tunes they've downloaded they most certantly woudnt have boughten them. Hell mp3s make me buy more, not less.

This is exactly what I disagree with. You're not stealing anything from them at all. You're switching the behavior of circuits inside a machine you own. That's all you're actually doing when an input source (such as a modem) is being written to your HD. You aren't taking anything from them, you're modifying the state of your own property.
Saying you're stealing from them is like saying that if you own a bunch of 1 sq inch pieces of paper of varying colors, and laid them out on the ground in a way that, if you stood back from it, looked like a famous painting, then you _stole_ that painting. This notion is ridiculous, and the fact that the law backs it up does not make it any less ridiculous. |
Except for the fact that I am modifing those circuts to match the pateren of there copyrighted material. It's still being used, and copied, but to a diffrent medium. If you get past the hole circuit shit, your still aquiring something through illegal methods, and not paying for a set of goods that are supposed to be paid for. I dont see how you can say its not stealing.

i say it's only stealing if you try to make a profit off of it.
i also think it may be IMMORAL to download music and never pay for it.
i download TONS of music. but, i use my mp3s to decide what to buy. Most of it, i delete, because it's crap. but, when i find stuff i like, I buy the CDs of artist becacuse i believe they deserve my support, and i am constantly buying vinyls as well, because i have no choice.
for instance Sasha - airdrawndagger. I downloaded this recently. it's not really my cup of tea, but i am going to go buy the CD anyway, just to support Sasha.
as for britney and puff daddy.. well, i will NEVER buy a CD from any artists that is in this campaign. (not that i would ever buy a britney or pdiddy album anyway) nor will i ever buy metallica for their role in napsters demise.
I think that someone should organize a counter campaign to this RIAA campaign, promising to directly support artists who allow mp3s to be downloaded, and to boycott all artists who support the RIAA.
the times are changing, vote with your dollars.

You aren't acquiring anything. You're just changing something you already legally own. Someone losing property is a necessary condition for stealing to have occurred. But artists are not losing anything. You are simply building something that is 99% the same as something they are trying to sell. You can't steal "potential gains", because they do not exist they only have the potential to exist. But that which does not exist cannot be stolen. It is only after something comes into existence that it can be stolen.
You say you're not paying for a set of goods that are supposed to be paid for. But the "goods" in this case are really nothing more than a conceptualization, in this case, an interpretation of vibrations (sound) by your ear and your brain. And it's irrational to copyright a conceptualization, because it's impossible to prove that two people conceptualize something the same way. It's like copyrighting the color green. Just because you look at something and call it green, and someone else looks at something and calls it green doesn't mean you are seeing the same thing. It just means you've been trained to label the two different perceptions the same way. But there's no way to know that the two different perceptions are not two different realities, because no objective standard exists to evaluate the similarity or lack thereof of the internal result of your nervous system's activity.

heres the thing. a lot of artists rely on people who buy cds that they've never heard before, just because the artist has a big name. thats why they don't like the internet shit. because someone can download their music, realize it SUCKS, and then NOT buy it. who are the artists that really care about this? p diddy, britney spears, metallica. THEIR MUSIC SUCKS! granted i like some metallica stuff, and hey i like p diddy's i need a girl song, but why the fuck am i going to buy a cd for ONE fucking song? i bought p diddy's single, but to him he cares a lot more about a $15 cd than a $4 single. and the one metallica album i own, i hate it (thank god it was a gift). these artists don't "pour" their souls into their music. and the ones that actually do, don't give a rats ass about people downloading, because all they want is for their music to be heard. and they know that people who actually love their music will go out and buy it.
if i was an artist, i would LOVE it if people went crazy when it hit online. we all know when everyone went nuts because airdrawndagger was online, and HEY we all went nuts again when it came out RETAIL, cuz we all wanted to buy it. and then, wow, what a shocker, we all went nuts AGAIN when it came out on vinyl! i own airdrwandagger on cd and vinyl, and i have wavy gravy on vinyl too. because I LOVE IT! its something special to own it, not just have a burned copy. hell, i think if i was an artist, i'd be in a release group releasing my stuff before it came out retail.
