How about we only veto one. I'll chose the one that gets the most votes I suppose.

Heh, vetoing "new york city".

Also, you're not taking place ziptnf? I guess that makes sense but you're one of the better DJs here

I was going to participate but I can't think of a theme yet. I'll post one later.

For what it's worth I don't think a round of vetoes is necessary here. It's just a theme, it's not even that important what it is since the interpretation is going to be completely up to you. You can't really get pigeonholed into playing something you don't want to play and whether or not it turns into an interesting set is going to be completely dependent on what you make of it anyway.

That being said, in response to a thread we had a while ago on MD I would like to go with spiritualism as a theme.
As the thread alluded to people seam to have very different interpretations of the term in a musical context. It'll be interesting to hear.

I don't know if that's necessarily the case. It's easier to be more creative with themes like hacking/cybersecrecy and nostalgia, but it's not quite as easy to be creative with themes like video games and dark space. The interpretations of those themes are a little more narrow than the others.

Say, where is Adam Soloman, the dude who suggested that we do themes in the first place? And Jack? You guys aren't interested in this challenge?

I don't really want to piss on your strawberries or anything, but you have been very zealous in organising a whole itinerary of challenges across the next two years, and were signing up for this one without even a clear idea of what the rules are. It strikes me as very hasty. Conventionally a theme challenge is a running thing, and different master themes are offered up on each challenge, which allows people to participate if they see an idea that inspires them. A one-off edition is going to end up with a never-ending debate about the theme, and I dont want to sign up without any idea what the concept is. To be honest Im just left feeling very apathetic towards further challenges after the big discussion we had, because it seems very obvious to me that not everyones heart is going to be in any of the options that were mooted.

I mean, I sort of agree with you. Perhaps I have been trying to please everyone, due to the fact that the thread where we were trying to come up with a new challenge had a host of ideas being shot back and forth and nobody really jumping on one idea or another except the traditional genre challenge. I guess since nobody really offered up any other structure of how we should approach the 6 different ideas that were posed in that thread, I just thought we should do all of them. I didn't want to have challenge after challenge all packed in one year either, since people have actual lives and don't want to spend all their time and money bothering with this.

Also, it's not like it's too late to change the schedule moving forward either. If we do 2 themes a year and 1 genre challenge a year, then the "master crate" ideas will be ditched entirely and the variety of challenges will be much less.

I guess I was trying to do too much. Less is more, after all, right?

What say everybody? Ditch the master crate ideas and just go for themes and genre challenges?

Also, while I have you here, Jack, how do you think themes should be chosen?

Having mulled it over a little, I actually think "science fiction" is a really good suggestion for this one, because if you look at other suggestions such as "space" and "cyber secrecy" they fall into similar territory. SF is broad enough to let people pick concepts-within-concepts (you could do a space exploration mix, a hacker mix, a giant robot apocalypse mix or a mix inspired by a particular film, novel or comic, to give just a few examples) and yet it's something easy to evoke with electronic music. If everyone's cool with SF as a concept, I'm definitely down for this.

Also: why not just roll with it? Run this one, see how it goes down, and if it's a success build on it.

Jack/Nick/others, would "Science Fiction & Fantasy" be too broad? I'd prefer SF & Fantasy, just to give people more room, but would be happy to do SF only; I don't have any experience with "theme challenges" to know better.

I personally don't like conflating SF with fantasy, but that's because I'm an insufferable wanker trying to intellectually validate my tastes.

Idk if I would combine Science Fiction and Fantasy. Both categories can be broad enough to stand on their own.

I like Terry Pratchett and Game of Thrones (I liked it before it was popular ), otherwise I think my insufferable intellectual wanker validations are still in good order.

In all sober seriousness, are we agreed on SF?
