Exactly... Bossman Ali has brought our Toronto locals to a worldwide audience... Carlo, Junkies, Nathan...
So yes he may play here few times a year (and another one coming up soon...not in Toronto...), but when our hometown heroes have got the global recognition they deserve from Ali's influence, its part of the game and shouldn't be criticized

dubfire's a much more dynamic dj than most people know. sure he's got a brand and a sound represented by his label and his average sets, and marries elements of house to techno, sounds futuristic. it rocks some people hard. it bores others. but he does it with finesse; he's second to none at employing technology.
i live in dc and caught an open to close hometown gig in march this year where he started with deep house grooves, went into house, tech house and techno and his last song in fact was old school underground hip hop.
in my opinion he's underrated.
by the way, Richie Hawtin (who played a few of his own opening ENTER SAKE sets at space ibiza himself, named dubfire's the best of the season, and with good reason). this link shares his dynamic range and capability to blow minds. it's a slow warm up build that will impress if you bother to take the ride.

having said all that, i don't condone his meldown one bit. it was lame and less than respectable. but he's human, and that's what we all have to remember no matter how much we love an artist. everyone has an ego, a bad day, a temper, and a moment where they let out something ugly they're not proud of. he is definitely getting his dues on this one - people are shitting all over him for it. i imagine he won't make that mistake again |
I think the problem is more how DJs play when they come to Toronto. I listen to the sets these guys play at clubs or festivals, so I get excited to hear them when they come by. Then they'll show up, play a generic tech house set and go home. They always play it safe here, it's frustrating.
