If you're going to do an online course, do it where they actually offer personal tutoring, not just where they have a library of vids.

There's plenty of great teachers who offer these services at much cheaper than the likes of PB etc...

[shameless plug] ....especially one of my best mates who runs http://16steps.co.uk/ - he used to be a big name on the underground hard house scene as a DJ, has had dozens of releases on respected labels (everything from funky house to minimal techno) but he's actually a GCSE music teacher as his main day job and plays several instruments so he knows theory as well.

His courses are great, much better value than anything the schools try to put out. Tell him I sent you and he should take care of you

[/shameless plug]

It really is. The difference is that you get to ask an infinite amount of questions from a working producer, not just be served a tutorial that covers a topic. And the advantage of my mate Alex is that he's a qualified music teacher for a living and classically trained so you also get that experience along with the tech/engineering/producing if needed.

As someone who actually went to Point Blank many years ago I have to say this video proves a little of my point about paying for just a library of videos are somewhat a waste of money.

It's always useful to see other producers working, especially when they are giving key commands and you can witness someone else's workflow, but they spend nearly whole minute of a 4 minute video discussing (in incredibly basic terms) how "Kick and Bass are important for dance music". Maybe the vids get a bit more technical as time goes on but I sometimes feel you're stuck with just want they want to show you.

EDIT: Actually, my cursory look at this wasn't fair. It seems with some of the courses you get a little bit of one on one time with the tutor and get to ask some questions. No bad after all.

I was a little bit disppaointed with Point Blank when I attended it. It was good from a pearls of wisdom viewpoint and exchanging ideas with other students, but the tutoring was now well structured and although funny, our tutor mainly told us funny drug addled music industry stories about the old days etc. I still learned a fair bit, but it wasn't dedicated lessons or teaching.

If you have the money, then learn some mixing tips. But other than that just youtube shit tutorials and make the best out of them.
