Orange, do it, seriously. I've met countless people while couchsurfing who have backpacked and hitchhiked all over the world. If you're worried about money, you can always try 'woofing'. Woofing is where you get free accommodation and food in return for your work at a farm. This is especially prevalent in Ireland. A bunch of the people I've met this past weekend in Ireland have done it and have stayed in the country for a while. If you couple that with couchsurfing when you go to the cities you want to travel to, you cut down costs considerably.
I save enormous amounts of money couchsurfing. It does mean you need to eat shit food more often than not because you want to save for alcohol (frozen pizza's, pasta/pasta sauce, etc). Also, you have to resort to sometimes some unpleasant sleeping situations (there was a time I had to use the cushions from three chairs as a mattress because the guy I was surfing didn't have a couch available). However, most hosts have an air mattress or a couch available. The benefit of experiencing another culture and hanging out with your host and possibly other surfers is well worth the trade off.
I mean, realistically, you could have your job/place in Berlin, save up money for travels, grab your bag, and hitchhike across a country, staying at couches along the way. If you run out of money, start woofing. If you don't want to hitchhike, coaches/buses are usually pretty competitively priced. If you are serious about this, go to couchsurfing.com and set up a profile page. Also look into Woofing for more info: http://wwoofinternational.org/ |
If I do make the move, it'll be to secure a job and stabilize there. This is still good info, though, because I would definitely bounce around in my free time and there's like doing it on a budget. Thanks for the links!

This is a rare moment of sapience from IGK, that certainly rings true for me. If you've gone through a break-up recently, that could well be contributing to a sense of nihilism that makes you think there really is nothing to lose. And cities always seem better when you make a flying visit to see the sights, eat out and party, rather than having to get up for work every morning. Which is not to say you shouldn't move to Berlin, but try and factor in your emotional state when making a decision.
I'm in a similar but also very different situation. A year ago I felt completely bored with my city, Leeds. I'd lived in the same place for four years and I felt like I'd exhausted it. I was mobilising to move to Manchester, a city I'm completely in love with having only ever been there to party and/or buy records and not knowing anyone, having any job or any idea of where to live. Then, almost simultaneously, I made a bunch of great new friends and I got into a relationship, which together seemed to reinvigorate the environment around me: new parties, new company, new emotional state. Now we're talking about moving in together and whether we want to stay here or start again somewhere new. A year ago I'd have bitten off someone's hand to move away, but now I feel like I've got great friends, a job I'm happy with, a great music scene and years of memories all where I live right now. Do I really want to throw all that out of the window and start all over again? I honestly don't know.
