Seriously though... racism comes in many forms these days, not like the institutional racism of before. Nowadays racism is much more a mindset.. everyone knows that it's frowned upon to be "racist" and that it's no longer socially acceptable, but yet it still exists.

True, people that have a set mindset won't change unless they want to, which is too bad but what are you gonna do? You can't fight hate with more hate. My beef is more with ignorance than with racism itself... educating yourself is the key IMO. "Matt" or "Katie" in Wisconsin (just an example, i lived there for 4 years) will find it very hard to shake the stereotype that all black ppl are thugs when they have never met a black person in their entire life and their only facet for experiencing black culture are rap videos. The question is then, if they truly think that this is true (all black ppl are thugs) and thus look down on them, can this kind of racist view be changed? Nowadays i don't think people just get up and decided to hate a group of people, there's always some kind of event or perpetuated stereotype that causes them to feel that way, like WWII veterans that still hate on Japanese ppl, or more recently, ppl hating on Arabs because of the actions of an extremist group that cannot possibly claim to represent the Islamic community of the World. I wish it didn't cost so much to travel places like overseas because I think if people just saw more of the world and didn't live in their own little bubbles people would be able to expand their minds more and understand where other groups of people are coming from instead of just holding everything to the standards of their own group, ya know? But hey, that's just what I think.

huh, I thought all rich white kids wanted to be black
this is true, I used to live in Fremont, CA. Average tiny house=500k.
67% asian population. about 4 black people. They all listened to mtv rap/rock, besides the foreigners.

Does CRACKER sound offensive? NO, its more of a joke. Is ******, gook, chink, SAND ******(LOL) offensive? YES
Anyone watch southpark yesterday, chefs parents freely called the southpark gang crackers haha. "Ya'll crackers wanna hear a story?"

Once created, this barrier is almost impossible to break down unless a major change of the social structure in that community occurs.

One point to make here:

Sociologically speaking the seperation of the group from the mainstream is a reaction to discrimination from the "core" society.

Basically it goes like this:

1) People get treated like shit, have their customs ridiculed, or so forth.

2) Said people react by becoming more tight-knit, and by adopting more unique cultural characteristics.

3) In turn, the core society sees these now even more outside the mainstream groups, and ridicules/disrespects them even more, further widening the gap.

Generally speaking each society has a "core" set of beliefs that are thought of as the "norm" and people deviating from that are thought to be odd, and often face racism.

If people were accepted completely for who they are differences would certainly still exist, but I don't think groups would be as blatantly different as they can end up being as a result of discrimination.

It's interesting how under the table most racism is these days though. I know in Michigan polticians use "Detroit" as a code word for minorities, and often make pointed comments about throwing money away and so forth.

Bigots now usually are smart enough to realize that their views aren't acceptable to the mass of society, so instead they use veiled comments and innuendo to get their point across.

If that's better than the previous...well, it's at least more civil on the surface. But it certainly doesn't solve anything.
