Yes, I'm sure they were just backed up, this is true. I have thought this before and that situation just made me think about how much faster and smoothly an automated system could run. As to your first question, it does usually take longer than they say it will, just nowhere near that long.

I've always been surprised at the salary but understand the education requirements are very high imop too high. Btw, pharmacist aren't legally responsible for any negative drug interactions. Doesn't mean they don't do their best but at the end of the day they're responsible for filling scripts the doctor writes.

If you want the money then get a degree in pharmacy instead of crying about.

I get a staph infection on my legs at least once sometimes 3 times a year. Everytime I get one I see a doctor, they prescribe antibiotics or I get them through IV depending on how bad the infection is. Last time I had one and took the prescription to a pharmacist he asked why I got these infections. He suggested I get plastic surgery on my legs to avoid this problem.

LOL @ last two posts.

In quite a few provinces in Canada pharmacists actually have an expanded scope of practice, whereby they can change or substitute prescriptions, refill without a doctor's order, prescribe certain meds, and perform certain interventions (like giving flu shots).

I have no idea what a pharmacist does in he U.S, but over here, a pharmacist goes through 6 years of academic studies and is part of the team that makes new medicine, often employed by companies.

They hand you brown bags full of condoms when you give them "the look". The rest of the time, they're in the back crushing up Oxycontin and snorting themselves silly.

People in this thread are mostly talking about retail pharmacist. Which is on the higher pay scale when it comes to that degree(100k to 275k a year). In the states they go through at least 10-12 years of schooling and residency.

You can also get a job at a pharmacy as a tech and as a assistant. Which can be achieve without the degree.

A computer database and auto dispenser makes no sense for the elderly or crazies who need their pills so accurately dispensed in an effort to allow them to manage their regiment.

Not to mention the enormous problem of people misinterpreting information from a database and harming themselves with bad drug interactions.

So youre saying a COMPUTER Would make more mistakes than a human being? Have your computer count to 90 about 50 million times. You're not going to get "accidents."
I dont even know what youre trying to say about elserly misinterpreting info from a database that will harm them. The whole point is that the database holds 100% of their record, thus being able to identify possible side effects and interactions, and thus not dispensing them.

I don't know where you're getting the belief that a pharmacist (or pharm tech with very little training/schooling, is more accurate than a specifically designed automated system.

I could be completely wrong but I would think the onus of not prescribing medication that interact with current meds should be the doctor's responsibility. I'm a bit irritated that it just took Rite Aid 5 hours to fill my klonopin perscription when they said it would be 30 minutes. Anyone else think some kind of machine could count out 90 pills and put them in a bottle?

agree,
and they always ask... do you have any questions for the pharmacist? and I always think why would I have a question for the pharmacist? I'd ask my doc that question before I ever got here...
