Piror to filming he thought what he was doing was the worst type of schlock spaghetti cliched mafia tripe that's ever going to be committed to celluloid and desperately tried to get out of it, even begging with producers to let him go. They didn't let him. When they were part way through filming he felt his fears were being confirmed and thought it was so bad he believed it was the nail in the coffin for his career.
He didn't even go to the screening for fear he'd be associated with such a bad film and only watched it when people started telling him how fucking great it was and only then realized how great it was.
