I beg to differ, it really depends on the club.. a lot of times at clubs the dj has almost an impersonal relationship w/ the crowd because the dj box is usually on a 2nd floor up and out of the way of the dancefloor (this is cool sometimes but i like to have more crowd interaction if possible).. at parties (im assuming we're talking about house/apartment parties or watever u want to classify, even frat parties watever) you are usually set up on or near the 'dancefloor' and up close and personal w/ the crowd (obviously they don't appreciate the music as much) but you should know this doing a party anyhow..
as far as the original question, i had been practicing about 6 months before i decided to hook up w/ a friend's dj crew.. but i had tables and had tried mixing way long ago, i just never got into it because this guy i knew was a hip-hop/scratch dj and for a beginner, that seemed hard. when i got my first set of decks (some cheapo belt drive tables) it was so hard to keep a constant pitch that i gave up for a couple months.. which was a really bad decision.. at this point, i'd almost recommend having beginners learn how to beatmatch on belt drive tables like i did, because when you move on to direct drive TT's like techs, my god it seems almost too easy!

I have been practicing for nearly 2 years. I have played on the radio, many parties and am looking into the club thing. I still don't feel ready despite constant practice. I find it very interesting that some people claim to play "major trance events" after a couple WEEKS of practice. Either you are a really fast learner, or that is a crock. I would like to know what a major trance event is to you.
I think this question is rigged. It depends too much on too many variables. Some DJs never play outside their homes and they can mix better than most pro's I've heard. Just an observation.
