Really? I also heard there's this circular thing that if you turn it, it makes the car go in a different direction

No shit that RPM is higher in lower gears and analogous speeds

But good luck doing any of this in an auto.

Sure, if you have a transbrake, otherwise it's simply impossible.

also... ferrari F40 - the greatest ferrari of all time for many professional car critics... turbocharged.

Are you fucking kidding me? I've driven an F40 and while it was a great car, it was made in 1987 and there's been a couple of technological advancements since then in engine technology. Ferrari hate turbos and admit they're being forced int o using them again due to ever harsher emissions standards - there's no way to get the same BHP boost with as low emissions. They said if they didn't have to, they'd never use a turbo again because of the lag it introduces in performance.

@dizzy - you're right, from a dead stop, the turbo an auto is laggy as fuck. When I'm already in 2nd or 3rd and doing anything more than 15mph, then it's fine but to pull away you're just waiting for that fucking spooling to hit. Again, my merc is sporty enough it's just that there's such a disparity to when the turbo is fully pressurized and not, that kills me. I don't even have to force downshift if I'm already rolling, just thumping on the accellerator is enough to make the revs jump and the turbo kicks in quite early, it's only really just when you're rolling slow and need it to power out that the lag kills you.

what is this "lag" induced into a turbocharged car's performance?

it only ADDS performance to a NA engine - performance it would otherwise not have.

who cares about auto's? we drive real cars over here, automatics are generally reserved for disabled folk. automatic in a performance car? preposterous.

"I've driven an F40"

"it was made in 1987"

the F40 is a pure motorcar, it's the "technological advancements" that have dumbed down driving.

Turbo lag is so 80's.

Twinchargers solved that problem.

But lag the same time can be fun too. Same for kickdown.
The 8 gear automatic of BMW really is amazing, and first automatic with lower fuel consumption than manual gearbox.
