It wasn't as bad as cremating the wrong person, as Jenny said, but here's the story

It was the funeral of the father of a childhood friend of my wife's. But, it was also Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras, so my parents prepared a huge banquet. So we decided to have lunch and then go to the cemetery.

As we were gorging on cannelloni, we found out people were showing to the wake much earlier than scheduled, so my wife got a little anxious and we left as soon as possible.

Once we got there, my wife said "Quick, do you see a bunch of Japs gathered around a chapel?" and, well, we did. So we joined them. The place was packed, so we couldn't get in. So, we waited outside.

When the rites began and we got in to offer the deceased some incense sticks, I saw this really good friend of mine crying his eyes out - and he wasn't supposed to be there - and, when I looked inside the casket, there was this elderly woman lying there. So the friend signalled that he wanted to talk to me outside. When we left the chapel, he looked at me, happy and puzzled, and said:

"Lira, I'm really happy you came but... Where do you know grandma from? Are you sure you didn't want to go to Mr. Araki's wake, two chapels down?"

And that's how we found out we done goofed up

Likewise, my wife is the last person I expected to pull the "Asians look the same" line

In her case it's twice as funny, because the Japanese and the Chinese alike think she's Cantonese.

Ah Marcus, remember when I told you we had an ayahuasca enthusiast of our own coming to visit? Good Christ, she was unbearable. Spent the entire weekend babbling motivational platitudes to people she'd only just met and recommending everyone else do exactly the things she does, all whilst telling us about the huge professional and romantic disasters she was unwittingly walking into.

It's always the people most broken who have the most to say about how others should be fixing themselves, eh?

Ours didn't go as far as telling us we should do it (in spite of the occasional polite invitation), but she kept telling us about people she lured into taking part, her 14-year-old daughter included. Besides, as far as problems go, she's got a stable job, an interesting side-job (she works as a storyteller on week-ends) and a family, so...

... she hadn't stooped to this level, I guess

When we told a mutual friend about her, though, he opened up about his ayahuasca experiences and the people he knew sound a lot like this person you've met. My favourite was the woman who became a born-again Christian thanks to Ayahuasca and decided God had told her not to bathe in the first two weeks of every months, and would tell her students they'd all go to hell if they didn't do the same.

15 bathless days in Brazil, try to picture that

It's hard to imagine, but this probably happens more often than we think.

I just can't help imagining the look on your faces when you saw it was not who you expected to see

As the great and wise Vivid Boy once said, "It's never your successful friends posting motivational quotes on Facebook."

Actually, I've just found the exception - Sweden's National Women's Football Team. I've seen them medal here in Brazil, and they now have "inspirational messages" on their jerseys.

But maybe it was the least successful player who came up with the idea and everybody else just felt bad for her
