You actually make a good point, but sometimes it's the fault of Hollywood for trying to make big budget "art" and having executive producers turn a subversive point in to a fan vehicle. One of the few people to actually pulled it off was Spike Jonze with Where the Wild Things Are who somehow managed to convince a studio to spend $100m to make a an indie art film masquerading as big budget fairy tale, and the studio didn't realize until it was too late.
Suckerpunch is a perfect example of the former where someone wanted to make a statement peace but it ended up being nothing more than than a Micheal Bay flop.
