Have you guys considered redefining what "Producer" actually means?
You all seem to have a pretty narrow definition that goes something like this: "A producer is someone who is in charge of twiddling the knobs until a choon pops out".

Consider The KLF. According to this definition they were not producers since all the knobs were twiddled by someone else (studio personnel). What they brought to the table were wild ideas and creative direction, which is not considered producing by this definition.

Consider Film/TV industry. A producer there is more like a fixer in charge of making sure that all the shit that needs to go down, does in fact go down. The position does not necessarily entail any creative parts or any technical parts either. Its more like a project manager.

Considering all of the above, why wouldn't Tiesto or Sven Väth be eligible in this "most talented producers of all-time" question? I find it unlikely that they have only used ghost producers without themselves sitting in the studio, beside the technically talented engineer, inputing ideas etc. Let me put it the other way - Would their biggest tunes have happened without them? Could Silence (Tiesto Remix) have been Silence (Johan Gielen Remix) instead, while sounding exactly the same?

Er... are you sure The KLF's tunes were made by studio engineers? I've read lots of stories about their crazy setup that snaked through different rooms of their house.

Either way, I wouldn't consider The KLF particularly great producers. There's a big difference between a "recording artist" and a producer. People in this thread seem to think it means "someone who makes music". That's not a producer. In electronic music, making music tends to be 95% studio production so we conflate the terms, but they're not the same thing.

According to the manual they hired all the personnel necessary to make a hit. Or at least they used to at some point. Perhaps later they became more self sufficent. Doesnt really matter, I just wanted them to illustrate the point I was trying to make. Which is - it all boils down to definition.

It's all good though, I'll happily accept the definition that is the defacto standard in this thread. I offer Eric Prydz to the mix. I know he is a bit of a one (or two) trick pony meaning that he has his sound pretty much dialed in without much room for deviations. But man, what a sound it is!

Imagine having recorded and created all those sounds and loaded them up into that big mother of a mixing desk and you get into the moment and let your creativity take over, and knob-twiddle everything into a brilliantly rich and wholesome musicscape.

If you don't believe talent begets popularity, then Amon Tobin, because to me the guy is as talented as he's versatile, much like Thomas Holkenborg. Also, if I recall correctly, neither ever produced progressive house, which is also a plus

If you believe popular acclaim is a sign of talent, then it's got to be one of those Scandinavian pop music whizzes, like Shellback or the folks from Dsign Music. I'm biased towards the latter because they pretty much shaped K-Pop from Trondheim, which is kind of amazing if you think about it.
