Americans are generally (<-- Key word) ignorant of the fact that any electronic is "techno". I think it stems from the world "technology" which means any digitalized form of music. But there are a good number of TAs and others that can tell you the differences and identify trance from techno. I am a hardcore uplifting trance fanatic, and guess what... I'm Asian-American...

As everyone said, I find techno to be far more hard pounding on the bass and raw sounding. Trance is more melodic and has very distinct parts to it (it can be heard).

Naw, you gotta keep it simple for the simple people:

Techno = fast disco made of machine noises/sneezes/whatever and a bunch of angry guys stomping the floor
Trance = a broken washing machine and 40 accordions in a big echo-y cave

"But why do you listen to that shit??"

I dunno.

I wanted to reply to this one cause I've had people say they hate trance when its really techno.
To me techno is very rude sounding with loud synths and a loud beat.
Trance is soothing with orchestral melodies and sometimes female vocals. Also trance is (I think) 96 BPM while techno is a lot faster.
