We had a discussion on another forum about this.. There is no such thing as Progressive Trance, at least that label is COMPLETELY WRONG for the people Cobalt listed above. Either you're denying that you like progressive HOUSE, or you are just misinformed. Ask Mara what they call their music, and you won't get a word "trance" anywhere NEAR their reply. |
Ok, I agree that Mara is more of a progressive house artist than progressive trance, but I wouldn't say the same for other artists such as those I listed. And progressive trance does exist because there are artists and DJs who describe their style that way.
| quote: | And what's this about "progressive trance being more melodic than house".. are you nuts? You're separating the genre into melodic and non-melodic and assigning different labels to it? If a song sounds like Xpander, its "progressive trance" just because it has melody? |
Basically yes. Xpander is the quintessential progressive trance track. It has elements of both progressive house and trance. There are many others that make a similar crossover, and I wouldn't toss them into the 'progressive house' classification.
| quote: | | Trance is trance, progressive house is progressive house.. Don't mix the two together, and try to understand that they are DIFFERENT - the vibe, the BPM, the people who produce it are very different. I don't consider anything to be trance if it's below 132 bpm. Simple as that, trance is defined by it's speed more than its synths, melodies, or anything else. |
Oh come on. It's not going to contaminate the 'purity' of the progressive house scene. The existence of a genre called progressive trance will not make people think that Digweed and Tiesto are synonymous. Furthermore, there is not some inseparable barrier between progressive house and trance. Progressive trance producers and DJs integrate elements of both.
| quote: | | If you're gonna start a new genre, at least label the artists properly. James Holden is not a trance producer :-P |
No, he is not a trance producer. But he is a progressive trance and progressive house producer.

When tons and tons of trance songs became formulaic and cookie cutter songs started to stagnate the scene, a lot of producers started to produce something different, something that takes the percussive rhythms of house music combined with the electronic synthesized melodies of trance music and fuse them together. These producers wanted the music to always evolve, thus, the term Progressive was introduced.
No, I wouldn't call Holden a trance producer because his productions not only represent the beautiful synths of trance, but also the percussive baselines of house. |
I agree.

Only his new stuff - his older material is more in the breaks area... |
That's true. Good point.

There's no such thing as progressive trance! its all progressive house. people just stick the progressive to trance cos it sounds cool and its the 'IN' thing at the moment. |
Artists and DJs described darker, housey sounding trance as progressive trance before the current vogue of progressive. It is not a new thing influenced by 'converted progressive fans.' I doubt that Breeder would have descibed their style as purely progressive house.
It's important to note that there is crossover between the two. Something can be called progressive trance and progressive house simultaneously. Labels are just meant to give some bearing on the sound, and exactness is not vital on a song-by-song basis. I have no problem calling tracks both progressive house and progressive trance. Different people describe music differently. But I do have a problem with progressive fans who feel that decribing anything as trance corrupts the 'house purity' of the sound. GU gurus are notorious for this.
