Yes there is a difference in quality between analogue and digital. Think of it like a video tape, if you make a copy of a videotape, the copy is a bit blurry and has crappy sound. If you make a copy of the copy, the picture and sound get worse. It's the same thing with that - the more you move it, the worse it gets.

But with digital, you will get exactly the same thing every time - it's an exact replica.

ah ok thanks webbie!
also my sblive! has a digital output... i guess thats what its for eh! (digital copies) makes sense now. but can i record through that line and make it a digital recording? or is that not possible? also the way i have my decks hooked up to the computer atm (line in) is it possible to put them through the digital port to get a better quality rip? im thinking this may not be possible because turntables are a analouge source right?

Smoking ..umm..something

I have a Sony MZR700. This MD can do standard, 2X and 4X long play. Although the ATARC compression is obviously higher for the Long Play modes I am suprised that the quality loss is not that bad. I have used the 4X for making "driving mixes" to be used when in the car. THe quality loss is not really noticed and a 288 minute mix makes the time fly by. I've just got a new puter that has on-board optical out and cant wait to record my next traktor set digitally.

I have to add that i am having problems with the rather cheapish in-line remote supplied with the unit. Seems as thought the cable is pretty dodgy and very prone to getting damaged/developing a fault. its annoying that in order to hear quality from this ~$430 unit (~1.5 years old) that you have to jiggle the cablke to get a connection.

hmm .. be careful with that digital output! my SBLive also has a "digital output" - but it's not optical. Take a careful look at the jack, if it has a red light shining out of it, it's optical. If it looks pretty much like a standard headphone jack, it's not optical. Remember that you can only record digitally onto the MD unit optically. A lot of DVD players have them, but not many soundcards. I had the same problem, thought the "digital" output on the SBLive would work, but didn't

You can get optical out for the SBLive, its available on the Platinum models. I once had an SBLive Value and after a little research I found it was possible (and relatively cheap) to buy a daughterboard that attached to the card and gave you SPDIF out. Maybe you could try this? Unfortunately the SBLive cards work on an internal 48kHz sampling rate. That means that all signals are downsampled to 44.1kHz before they are stored or played thru digi out. Apparently this leads to some quantisation? errors which alter the sound a little.

The 4 ways to make PC-->MD digital recordings:

1) Use a NetMD unit, which performs digital transfers via USB.

2) Get a soundcard with optical out.

3) Use your sound card with the digital coaxial out and get a coax->optical converter: http://www.minidisc.org/part_CoaxOp...Conversion.html

4) Get one of these babies and you can transfer USB->Optical:
