When I rippe sets from the essntial mix I go from the digital output to the computer - and then encode @ 192 - should most people not be doing this????

Fuck, this is what exactly I didn't want this thread to turn into. I didn't want people to come post in this thread and bitch about the MP3s, because we're getting shit for free. How spoiled are you to complain about free stuff?
By the way, thanks to all who provided the useful info about the LAME encoders.
I have a really old encoder done by some amateur programmer. I think it was Yuansoft or something, but when I rip CDs and encode it by Yuansoft (think it's an older version of the LAME), it sounds absolutely fine and crystal clear.

Well I'll try to explain a bit
Rips are done by various people in various groups
Some of the groups really dont pay much attention to how good the rip actually is
So then we get the poor quality on some rips
Just wanting to do a quick job
On the other hand it can also be the equipment someone is using.. old needle.. bad cables...bad soundcard ... creating a fucked up sound... often leading even to mono sound
Since almost no one notices this.. no one complains either.. and the ones that do complain get dismissed
Also it can be ofcourse that the vinyl's fucked up

Good example... thats just the bad equipment the ripper used
i'm sick of downloading tunes with my slow modem, listening to it and finding it has skips or has unlistenable quality so i have to try to find another version and download that
its annoying when its difficult to find any version of a tune, you then have to hope its good quality, if it isn't then its gonna be even harder to find a good one, then add on a 56k modem and a request list with probably 1000s of tunes on it
