Yeah I get it all the time. Last week the teacher let us listen to the radio in physics and this one dude was like yelled out that I wanted them to put on a techno station. And I'm just sitting there thinking "what an idiot, there's nothing even close to that around here" so then him and his friend proceed to make fun of me cause I listen to "techno" (note, they can not say techno w/o pausing and putting up their fingers in those quotation things). The one dude asked me if there were any lyrics to the stuff I listened to and I said sure and he started to make fun of it saying shit like studdering the word "stop sign" and repeating it over and over.

They're my friends though, and it's funny hearing them make fun of it cause they have no damn clue what they're talking about. Well, that's the end of my rant...hopefully it's half understandable

Well, I have a decent speaker system, and most of the people in Western NY listen to either shitty rap or shitty rock/emo/indie crap. I've gotten yelled at by roommates and hallmates for blasting trance and house music really loud w/lots of bass. They would constantly complain to the RA (Resident Advisor) about all the "techno" (most people can't distinguish, even though techno is a very specific genre of electronic music) they'd hear at ungodly hours of the morning. I also had a poster my friend gave me of Sasha's San Francisco GU, everybody was wondering who the fuck he was and why did he have a girl's name (I had to explain that he is one of the best DJs of all time and is practically considered a diety by fans) A lot of my friends from Buffalo seem to like trance (not really as keen on progressive but don't mind it) but they are NO where near as interested in it as my friends down in Long Island. But it was all cool, last year second semester, a new guy moved in to the room across the hall from me.. and the first day he was in his room, he was playing "The Politics Of Dancing"... needless to say we got along quite well! It was great, 2 trance fans living in the same hall in an area where most people listen to Ani De Franco and the Goo Goo Dolls!
Right now I'm living in an on campus apartment and the kid who lives upstairs always bitches at me and bangs on the floor cuz he says his room vibrates w/the bass.

Not really, no.
Actually me & my friend have managed to convert quite a lot of people to electronic music.

Of course there are always people who think guitar is the only real instrument and won't change their views no matter what they say. I just ignore them.

I don't get much shit at all. But i think Britain's a bit different, more people tolerate it. The only shit I get is off moody "alternative" people saying stupid shit like,
"It's all synthesised anyway..." which has to be the most blatantly obvious statement ever...

"what's so special about that music? some guy must have made that with a computer"?

like britney and eminem's music aren't made with computers

anyways, normally I won't try to "convert" anyone, so I can keep all the good music to myself :

but sometimes house people annoy me when they don't respect trance as real club music. now there's some debates.

Boy,do I know how you feel!I got tons of shit thrown at me in the beginning. The usual stuff(computer music,"you listen Darude and all tha crap?!" and so on)But then after a while, when those people relized that I didn't give a shit about what they said, that I knew several hundred times more than them about the music and that I knew that most of the people that gave me shit were musical losers(which means that they only like the music that everyone else does in order to cover their own asses),they stopped doing it.And when I went to I Love Techno this year, and did nothing to hide the fact that I was going to a foreign country just beacuse of my love for the music, ppl really started to respect me for having my own strong opinion, despite all the shit I had got and the fact that they didn't understand the music.

So as everyone else have said before me:these ppl are miserable, childish and ignorant to throw shit at you like that. You just have to ignore them and be patient. You might not be as lucky as me when it comes to ppl understanding your love for the music, but who knows?Considering the fact that ppl understand my love for the music in a town where electronica is virtually outlawed,it might happpen to you too

But like you said,it's not like we're any better, going around throwing shit about hiphop just cos we saw Ja Rule on MTV.So we should be just as careful.

we had a music discussion the other day at school in our english class and we were talking about diffrent styles and shit,..so this guy starts to talk shit about electronic music and trance, so i quickly snapp his fingers and the fight is on (with words), then he give me some crap for my ambiet, then i get really pissed off.

he goes like: "You and your reaver friends can stick your monoton music up your ass"

im like: "wtf dude, there is a sense of emotion in this shit, they do it by heart, not by how much mony they are going to get from the tracks"

and then it gets really messed up, the teacher agree with this dickhead.

so i wonder if you also get alot of crap from people around you (school, work etc.etc.)?

I had a similar incident in Grad. School about 2 yrs ago. It was actually my old Physics undergrad. professor, whom I got into a debate on "what is music" at a local coffeehouse. This guy is a pretty cool guy, not your normal professor, and relates pretty well to the kids. He used to be a free-spirited hippy that hitchhiked around the country and toured with the Dead when he was my age. Now he's a frickin' madman genious, working on Black Hole theory. But he really didn't give trance music, or electronica as a whole much of a chance. My solution was simple: I bought him a ticket to see Oakenfold. Now, Oakey hasn't been up to par lately, but 2 yrs ago his show was incredible, so it was a good "introduction" for him. By 2:30 AM this guy was a sweaty mess, dancin' his arse off with a pair of glowsticks in his hands!!! He had the time of his life, and I still see him out at shows every now and then!

This situation might have been different, because I knew this professor had an open mind to things. Many people whom don't understand the music are too unwilling to open their minds up to something new. I see that more and more now, especially here in the States. On the one hand, I want to show them that they might actually enjoy it, and not be so judgemental on the music or the "scene". But on the other hand, there's some people I really wish they were never introduced to the music or the "scene", because they are the ones who contribute to giving trance a negative stereotype. Honestly, I try not to care about this anymore, because people are people, and will do as they wish, and often times are too stuck on their own personal opinions and beliefs that they refuse to open their minds just a little bit. But when they do, I always see the same change of expression in them, much as it had changed me.
