Smoking ..umm..something

I had a nasty one here in Toronto recently. I was in a club in town, doing the lights in the DJ booth chatting away to the DJ. He knows I spin myself , so halfway though the night and when the club is most packed, he wants to go do something (with a ladyfreind!!), and says "take the next few mixes for me..i'll be back soon" at which point he immediatly disappears, leaving me in front of three decks, 12 channel mixer, two cd decks, a bungle monitoring system and about a thousand people. I get to work, look down at the record playing and there is less than a centimeter left(!!!) and the next track isnt beat matched (!!). I just get it matched up and I'm about to bring it straight in and at that exact moment, a (dumb) girl in front of the booth(on the dancfloor) puts her arm in the air and without looking accidentally slams her glass down on the record, spilling the entire contents (ice 'n all) over the choon. I am pissed off hard, pick up the record (still with ice on it) and fling all the spillage right back at her. I throw the track back on and manage a v. dodgy mix. Not fun, but it made me laugh after.

Be Cool!

Well i've had some of these experiences but the one that got me pissed of was i get to a gig and i found out that i forgot some of my records, thats where i learned the beauty of b-sides. Also i usually dj with another guy and when one of us is mixing the other guy takes care of all the people who want to hear all their favourite songs. Well once i'm doing a gig all alone and right when i'm mixing two songs together this drunk ass comes up to me and starts budging me, i tell him to wait but he persistantly keeps pushing me just because he wants to hear some piss ass commercial track that i wouldn't even play if my life depended on it. Well i somehow mixed the song alright and after that got this guys ass thrown out.

These make me very nervous about being a DJ. Well I'm not but my boyfriend is starting out and he is playing at his first party in a couple months. Scary

Well, Dj Bo I know what you mean. I used to constently get someone tryin to request something while I was in the middle of a mix. Several times, they would go as far as pulling my headphones away from my ear so they could yell in my ear. Used to piss me off.
And for you DJ RANN, wow...that sucks. When things like that happen, that are totally not your fault sucks. I know the feeling. All eyes are on you , yet what can you do? It would be kind of tacky to get on the mic and say that some idiot caused the fuck up...so ya just kind of shrug your shoulders and go on.

hehe... i think (like to think) i thrive off pressure.. just spinning for the first couple times in front of a few friends.. i seem to do better! (star 69, you say?)
well.. i hope it carries over when i actually do some real parties. but the beatmatching seems to go quicker, i drop the records in at the right time, and seem to mix smoothly.

but being a clumsy fuck that i am, i bet that removing the wrong record will happen to me an endless amount of times in the future.

my moment of shame..

my story is not that good, but here's sharing...

i've been producing for a while, but i just started spinning, local stuff, i'm not that good. i'm all set to spin this house party later in the week (two weeks ago) and i decide i am going to drop one of my own tracks. i have denon cds as well, so i burn it up. its a pretty nice progressive tune, but i made it, so i know how it goes. there were 16 measures of synth before the baseline and bdrum hits.

so i set up the mix, and i loop the 16 measures over the track that was playing. i play another 12 measures and mix out. play 4 measures alone and anticipate this huge bass kick that i bet will get the party going. the 4 measures pass, and no kick. i let it play 8 more measures, then another 8, expecting the kick to jump in. it turns out i burned just the synth loop on the track with no bassline or percusion. it took me like a minute to realize it, so i spaz out and just switch the fader back on the next downbeat, figuring my shit will still be in sync. i drop the fader just in time to hear 8 off sync beats and a closing symbol as the track ends. so i switch back to the same synth riff and recue the other track and mix back. to the same song that i played for like 8 minutes.

i stopped getting requests at that point, and started getting "constructive criticism" from my friends who noticed - all of em.
