Yes and no.

The "official" deal is no - unforunately, Sony forces you to buy the higher-end (and considerably more expensive) MZ-N1 if you want the headphone/line-out switch.

However there is a hack to allow for the "line out" switch on an 505 or 707. But really, what it does is maximize the volume and turn off all bass settings. Not a real line-out in that regard.

Unfortunately, brianbartel, what you've said is correct in regards to Sony - NetMD only works one way, and I don't think there's any way around that yet, or if there ever will be. I have a hunch it's a hardware rather than a software limitation. If so, it will be impossible to devise any sort of software "hack" that will allow MD->PC USB uploads.

Theoretically there should be no problem uploading via the traditional means, even in regards to that "second generation recording" junk. What program are you using?

Try using something like Cool Edit Pro, or any good audio editing program like that (I'm not sure, but perhaps Window's Sound Recorder could work just as well!). Then just play off your MD (preferrably with the hacked "line out" - or if you wish, turn up the volume all the way and turn off bass settings), and record with your program, from the line-in of the soundcard.

If your soundcard is decent enough (Soundblaster 128 or above, roughly speaking), with a decent enough line-in, then there shouldn't be any really big issues with sound quality. Of course, it depends on who you ask, but most people you encounter won't be die-hard audiophiles who will choke on your recording.

One more note - before you do the "real" record, check the sound levels (input) on your PC, so that there is no clipping when the sound is being recorded. For that you really need something like Cool Edit 2000 or Cool Edit Pro. They have a visual representation of your audio, and if it starts clipping, the graph will start hitting the upper and lower boundaries (a sign that you should lower the input volume on your line-in port on the soundcard).

What, do you work at sony? sheesh. i got the 505 it's fine. it doesn't come with a car kit (i don't need one) or a battery (i have tons of rechargables already) and all the rest is there, cept the software, which can be hacked.

not true. data can pass digitally both ways. Currently, the only app to use is OpenMG which comes with the player, and of course doesn't allow this. but, theoretically, if the OpenMG software sends a certain sequence of commands to the MD that says "allow transfer" then that can be duplicated. and vice versa, if the OpenMG software determines if the signal is a "second generation recording" ie, (me recording my own damn records i paid for), and disallows the copy, then theoretically, another program could simply ignore that and allow the copy.

however, this would mean hacking the NetMD protocol, which has so far proved elusive. work is being done and progress made. there are other ways around the process as well.

and if all else fails, you can always use analogue transfer, there are no limits on that.
