I forgot to add to my post that 'Creative SB Live! and Audigy 1 sux0r!' that in addition to the problems that I've mentioned (especially under Windows 2000 or XP), the sound quality from either of those cards isn't all that great - in fact, for their high price, their sound quality is worse than mediocre. On top of that, the 24-bit/96kHz support the Audigy 1 claims to support is only half-true; the Audigy 1 chip re-samples everything internally down to only 16-bit/48kHz, which means that it's only a 16-bit sound card that merely supports 24-bit digital input and output. In other words, it doesn't sound all that much better than the craptacular SB Live!. Worse, the analog output stages of both the Live! and the Audigy 1 are reaaaally crappy, to add to their woes.
