I think that if a club decided to play trance exclusively it would fail within 2 months. There is absolutley no way that any club could just play trance. I (and probably lots of other people here) would get sick of hearing it week in and week out, and we are trance addicts. Therefore once every 2 weeks or once a month would be the most. It gives DJs a chance to play totally different sets than what they played 2 weeks or a month ago. There arnt enough good trance tunes around to have a night every week.

4x4 patterns & huge breakdowns are a trance trademark absolutley, but
it needs to move on. it needs to find some new structures & sounds if it can. because alot of it is just barbie & ken music Plastic, generic recycled crap.

I agree with this. People could have made tunes in 2000 and release them today and have them hailed as unbelievable hits which is a sad state of affairs (and imo what Nu NRG sometimes do, they have the very trademark uplifting sound from 2000). Trance may have moved on a little bit, but its basis is still in 99. Trance does need find more unique sounds, but usually when a unique sound is discovered and released, people often shun as being TOO progressive. I remember tiestos essential mix from 2001, people on the music discussion forum were saying that the first half was much too progressive for their tastes, even though it was still trancey. I think its everyone's fault (producers, dj's and listeners) that trance hasnt moved on.

Its really starting to get this way in my opinion too.

So wat are we to do?

I think its up to producers to experiment with these new sounds, breaks, hugely different formats, and make trancey sounding songs which dont fit into the typical trance format of bar bar bar bar breakdown breakdown bar bar bar bar. As long as the music is good people will play it. Who says a slight bit of breaks cant be introduced to a trance set? The set im listening to now (Digweeds Essential Mix from october) is mostly 4/4, but there are 1 or 2 tracks that are breaky. But then again, if tiesto started playing tracks like this im sure that we would all whinge and say that he plays too many different genres and should get back to his roots.

Get back to his 2000 trance sound.

Im not one of those people. I think tiesto and other djs should experiment with new sounds, as long as its good music.

There is my huge :Crasher Kid:esque type post jam packed with my opinions.

Well, i think that you can see the state of Trance these days by looking at the Gatecrasher series. Black, Red, Wet are all classics, but the new ones, they just seem way too commercial with a few good tracks thrown in. I guess the first were commercial in their day as well, but they do have a true trance sound to them, and I still regulary listen to them.

Ok, but why does a DJ get hammered when changing?

People whinge that DJs dont change their sound, but when they do they whinge even more!

ok i know its not a good example but Oakenfold. He does not play his 97-98-99 style trance anymore. Sure he might drop a few classics in but he has moved on. He gets hammered for it. "Oh Oakenfold has lost his roots, he shold go back to his old style bla bla bla"

To tell you the truth I think good on him, for doing new things, not staying the same. He may be 'selling out' or whatever you want to brand him, but hes trying new things. I have to d/l another one of his sets to see what hes playin these days. Plus I know a few people who have seen him play (Helen and a mate in Singapore) and they said he was awsome.

So if people are gonna whinge that DJs dont progress their sound, when they do change it don't hack on the DJ. Go fuck yourself instead!

Trancey ash it does go both ways. I think alot of the time ppl gripes are that when the superstar dj does change their style they dont pull it off. They either dont have the skill in mixing or knowledge of the music they play because theve just started playing that "genre".

it also hurts your ears when u listen to a set and the dj tries (which is great!) to mix in tracks that in no one go together or flow.

I think your definition of "true trance" is the classic trance of 1998 and 1999, and I think Black, Red and Wet from around that time are the most commercial-sounding of the entire Gatecrasher series. By commercial-sounding I mean upfront and often "simple"-sounding.

I think as people started getting tired of the upfront stuff and wanted something different, they discovered trance that sounded darker, more progressive, and often more innovative, and out came Gatecrashers that sounded as such.

I do agree some of the recent trance is remanufactured, e.g. I think Gouryella - Ligaya is a rehash of Tenshi. But there are still a lot of other good new-sounding trance tracks.

I thought of Push - Strange world (2000 remake) as soon as I read that... there is breakbeat at the end of that track!

Even Gatecrasher Wet had breakbeat with Hybrid - Finished symphony, though I guess it's not really a trance track... even though Wet is one of the best examples of classic trance.

Then why the reference to Australia in particular? ("Is trance dead in Australia?").

If you're talking about Australian trance producers then I guess we don't get to know of many. Liquid M comes to mind, they've been playing live at the Altitude events in Sydney and seem to be well-liked.
